The Donkey in the Well" width="200" height="133" />When I first started out in my blogging venture I often shared inspirational stories. I know, I haven’t told one in quite some time. But, there will be one coming today which was inspired by a comment that was left on my last post by one of my regular readers, Tim Singleton. (Thanks Tim for the inspiration for this blog post!)

Tim shared his disappointment about a prospect he spent money and a lot of time on, educating him about his product and then in the end, lost to his sponsor. The prospect’s reasoning, Tim’s sponsor was a “bigger deal.” Huh? Are you for real?

Sound familiar?

If you’ve been in the network marketing industry long enough, I bet it has happened to you too at least once. I know it happened to me before.

Yes it stings. Your ego gets rattled a bit, but you can’t let that get to you. And for God’s sake, don’t let self-doubt creep in. It has nothing to do with you.

When someone passes you by and joins with your sponsor instead, because “he’s a bigger deal” there’s nothing you could have done. Don’t worry, karma will take care of it. What goes around comes around.

Besides, every big shot started out as a little shot that kept on shooting.

But on to the story I was going to tell you….

The Donkey in The Well

One day a farmer’s donkey fell into a well. The poor thing cried piteously for hours as th farmer tried to figure out what to do.

Finally he decided since the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey. So, the farmer invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed shovels, and began to shovel dirt into the well.

All the other farm animals were very upset about this, because the donkey was their friend. But they discovered there was nothing they could do to help him. At first, when the donkey realized what was happening, he cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well, and was astonished at what he saw.

With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off, and take a step up on the dirt as it piled up. As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well, and trotted off!

Takeaway from this story: Life is going to shovel dirt on you. All kinds of dirt. But each obstacle, road block, and yes, lost prospect can be a stepping stone. What happens to you isn’t nearly as important as how you react to it. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not giving up!

Shake it off, and take a step up!

There will be many more detours on our way to success. Taking the “scenic route” can be a great learning experience. I am a strong believer that everything in life happens for a reason. Sometimes we find out what the reasoning was for certain things that happened in our life, and sometimes we don’t.

So, never let self-doubt creep in. Keep believing in yourself…
and keep on shooting!

To Your Massive Success!

As suggested, I installed the WordPress Jetpack plugin a couple of weeks ago because that was the only way to update the WordPress Stats plugin I had used up until then. Little did I know what this little plugin would reveal just a short time later.

Well, on New Year’s Eve I received my first annual report titled “Your 2011 Year in Blogging.” What I found out in this report was very interesting to say the least.

For example it showed me…

How many visitors I had during the past year.

Where they came from.

My top referring sites.

Busiest day of the year and the most popular post of that day.

Which posts received the most views in 2011 and the most stunning revelation that some of my most popular posts were actually written BEFORE 2011. Hmmm! That oughta give me something to think about.

It also revealed my most commented on post and it told me who my most active commenter was…and a lot more.

Overall this little plugin gave me quite some insights which I am very thankful for. If you haven’t installed it on your own blog you can find it here Jetpack by WordPress.com It also prompted me to think about making some changes to my blog this year.

But before I do that I would love your input and I would like you to be completely honest please.

Top Commentator Award

As you can see I already changed the way I will highlight my Top Commentators from now on forward. In the past I wrote a post at the beginning of the month thanking the top 3 commentators for the past month.

A couple of things happened … Sometimes they were the same people just in a different order. The other thing and what I kind of didn’t like was that the post I wrote to thank and congratulate them was only visible for a short time before it scrolled down on my blog.

I thought a better idea would be to spotlight the Top Commentator in the sidebar where it could stay visible for the whole month. Since there isn’t much room in the sidebar I thought of just highlighting the #1 Commentator for the month.

Your thoughts, suggestions, ideas?

Most Popular Posts

I mentioned above that some of my most popular posts were “How To” posts. To add a “How To” category has actually been on my mind for quite some time. So you can expect me to share more of those in the future. Is there anything in particular you would like me to share with you?

The other most popular post where story posts like…

“What Can You Learn From A Mayonnaise Jar And Coffee About Life”

“Can You Make A Difference? | The Starfish Story”

“Whatever the Mind Can Conceive and Believe | An Inspiring Story of Determination and Realizing Your Dream”

These types of posts are actually my favorites too so if you would like more like these just let me know. I am here to please

Please leave me your feedback in the comment section below. Thanks so much!

If you don’t know and don’t have a clear vision of what success means to you it will be almost impossible to achieve it.

Since we are all different, success will mean different things to you and me. To some people success is just getting up in the morning. To others it means reaching the lifestyle of their dreams.

Success isn’t a destination. It’s a journey. It has peaks and valleys, twists and turns and yes, also the occasional road block.

Success needs planning. But before you can plan you need to know exactly what you want. That’s where the clear vision comes into play.

For the occasional speed bumps and roadblocks
I like to have my favorite success quotes handy.

Today I would like to share them with you starting with number 10 and counting down to my very favorite…

10. “Most people give up just when they’re about to achieve success. They quit on the one yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game one foot from a winning touchdown.” _Ross Perot

9. “Success is tons of discipline.” ~Al Tomsik

8. “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.” _Michael Jordan

7. “Every single successful entrepreneur I know has studied and accumulated information on their industry that is the equivalent of a Master`s or PHD”. ~Mike Dillard

6. “Success Starts With A Dream…Followed By Action.” ~Unknown

5. “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” – Les Brown

4. “In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.” _Bill Cosby

3. “Success is steady progress toward one’s personal goals.” ~Jim Rohn

2. “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.” Vince Lombardi

and my #1 favorite….

So there you have them, my top 10 favorite quotes about success.

One that reminds me almost daily to adjust my attitude is one I came up with myself.

“Success starts and ends in the mind. Period.”

It’s really true! Whatever mood you start your day with sets the tone for the whole entire day.

For example this morning my mood was pretty good when I got up. But then life set in at the Flood house. My youngest wanted to check his email and started to complain about the slow internet. The oldest got mad at the stuck door handle when he tried to leave for work. One thing led to another and within minutes I was in a bad mood.

Thinking that today was the day I needed to write a blog post I found myself in a real pickle. “How will I ever get something positive and inspiring down in that kind of mood”, I thought.

And then, wham, my quote popped in my mind ….”Success starts and ends in the mind. Period.”

I changed my attitude and look what happened.

To Your Massive Success!

If you have known me for a while, you know that I love quotes. Not a single day goes by where I don’t use them or add a couple of new ones to my collection. Motivational quotes have become a part of my daily routine.

Why are quotes so popular?

Well, for starters they inspire, motivate, encourage and empower us. They give us hope, they teach and at times they even make us laugh.

“Bessie Braddock (to Winston Churchill): Winston, you’re drunk. Churchill: Bessie, you’re ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober.”

Sometimes they are the golden words of great leaders leaving behind their wisdom in just a few simple words. Other times they are the empowering and encouraging words of successful people we are looking up to.

Walk into any doctor or dentist’s office and most likely you will find some pictures with quotes hanging on the walls. My husband, who recently was called for jury duty even found quotes hanging on the walls of the court house.

Why?

Because people want to be surrounded by positive thoughts. With all the negativity around us we are clinging to those things that are positive, that give us hope, encourage us.

If you have a MLM home based business like I do, then you know, that there will be times when things don’t go smoothly. The road to success is paved with many obstacles and challenges. It takes courage, persistence and perseverance to stay the course.

Quotes are the perfect “motivational candy” I need to keep me going, keep me motivated and inspired when I hit a rough patch either in my personal life or in my business.

In fact, we all love heroes so much that we wanted to be heroes ourselves! Not a remote thing to really think about when you’re a little child, especially if you’ve become so enamored with the powers that one could possess – power to zap enemies and make them vanish right before your very eyes, power to fly (a favorite!), power to carry and lift heavy objects like buildings, power to stop objects from its tracks, the power of heightened senses (sight and hearing).

As we grow old, we lose sight of what it takes to be a hero anymore and as we fall into the daily humdrum of everyday life, we don’t see ourselves as someone extraordinary - so un-hero-like.

But, here’s the catch: in our seeming ordinary life, we just might have what it takes to be a hero.

CALL. Heroes don’t start out strong. They are just as ordinary as all of us. In most movies, becoming a hero begins with a call to do something, a mission. At which, you begin a journey.

TRIALS. Tasks will be thrown at the hero in progressing levels of difficulty until one is considered worthy to move on to other tasks. In this stage, however, one shouldn’t ignore signs of help and guidance from unlikely people who could provide the necessary wisdom to help the hero proceed. These “helpers” may just provide the right weapons to help a hero succeed in a quest.

INSIGHTS. Alas, all trials have been successfully hurdled and the hero is empowered, emboldened, and transformed. New insights gained, powers and capabilities discovered. And, with this renewed strength and knowledge, the hero proceeds.

RETURN. The first journey was a journey towards self-discovery as to what it really takes to be a hero. Now, a new journey begins. Equipped with the right mindset and an awakened version of one’s self, the hero is now ready to return and go on another journey to fulfill your lifelong mission or task.

In MLM as with any other business, we are all embarking on a journey towards success. We are here because of a call, we‘ve encountered trials that could have weakened our spirits but thankfully, because of wise mentors and great advice from colleagues, we’ve moved on and on. We are now better and enlightened networkers, and we are empowered online entrepreneurs because of these trials that shaped us into who we are now. We have transformed.

And just like a hero, we are moving on to another journey of transformation – that of the people who count on us, building them up to be the best in their business.
That’s all it takes to be a hero in the MLM business world.

Not everyone joining the network marketing industry will make it to the top. Newcomers are often lured in with the promise …Oh, it’s easy. Anyone can do it. But to have success in network marketing it really takes a special kind of person. So, what traits do all “Successful Network Marketers” have in common?

Let’s take a look…

Successful network marketers lead by example. They are totally plugged in. You can find them on every conference or training call as well as company events. They are constantly improving themselves through reading books, listening to audio or watching video courses or attending seminars.

Mike Dillard, the founder of Magnetic Sponsoring puts it this way…“Every single successful entrepreneur I know has studied and accumulated information on their industry that is the equivalent of a Master`s or PHD”.

The network marketing industry is no different. There are strategies and skills to be learned and the learning curve is quite steep. But this learning curve can be cut in half or more with the proper network marketing training.

Successful network marketers also continually sharpen their skills. They know nothing stays constant and things are changing all the time and very rapidly, especially in the online world. So they always keep on top of the latest marketing tactics and techniques.

Successful network marketers have high work ethics. There’s no playing around or treating a business like a hobby. Successful network marketers are extremely disciplined, hard-working individuals.

A positive attitude is another trait of the successful network marketer. There’s no I can’t. Only I CAN and I WILL succeed. They know that even failure is nothing more than another opportunity to succeed.

They are excellent problem solvers as well. Rather than making excuses when confronted with a difficult situation they will make every effort to find a solution. They are humble enough to put their ego aside and ask for help when needed. You will find that many successful network marketers have mentors and consult with them on a regular basis. They are also team players and know that without their team they won’t be successful.

Successful network marketers are visionaries. They have the ability to envision success long before reaching it. They know exactly where they want to be in 2, 3 or five years. They have a clear picture in their mind of what their business will look like, and are constantly working towards that vision.

Successful network marketers set goals and follow a carefully thought out road map making adjustments when needed. They also have patience and know that everything worth having is worth waiting for. So they never lose focus of their ultimate goal.

Successful network marketers never quit! They know that there will be peaks and valleys and that the road to success is not always smooth. They are driven and determined to do whatever it takes to reach their vision, their ultimate goal of the lifestyle they desire.

To Your Success!

Here’s an amazing story to illustrate my point for today on how to stop getting ready to get ready and instead take immediate action with the tools already available to you. You know without action your network marketing business is not going to grow. Au contraire. There has to be constant and consistent action to keep it alive. Massive action taken will even put it on turbo charge.

But anyway, let’s move on.

I heard this story told by Roberto Monaco who is a great story teller and public speaker. Oh and by the way, he was the top producer in the Anthony Robbins Company for 5 years straight.

Without further ado, here is the story. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.

The Little Dog and the Lion

There was this family on vacation in Africa and they had a little dog with them.

Somehow the dog got loose and disappeared. The family was devestated because they thought their little dog was lost forever. They searched and searched but they couldn’t find him.

Meanwhile that little dog had run into the bush. He was really scared because there were a lot of skeletons and dead animals along the way.

Suddenly he heard a loud roar and as he turned around he saw this huge lion charging at him. “Oh my gosh! What am I going to do? This lion is going to eat me alive if I am not resourceful and do something quick.”

He looked around for something and saw this dead animal. “I have an idea,” he said to himself. With the lion still charging at him, the dog turned his back, pretended to eat the dead animal and started talking to himself in a loud voice so the lion could hear him …”Hmm yum, yum. This is so good. I love this lion that I just killed and am eating for breakfast.”

The lion stopped dead in his tracks. “Wow,” he thought, “this little dog killed that big lion? I better not get anywhere near him or he is going to kill me too.” And he escaped.

A monkey up in the tree saw and heard the whole thing. He swung from the tree and followed the retreating lion.

“Hey lion’” he said, “I saw the whole thing. That little dog is a liar. He didn’t kill that lion. It was already dead. He was playing a trick on you only pretending to eat it so you wouldn’t attack him.”

Now the lion was really angry. How dare this little dog to make such a fool of him. “I’ll kill him and eat him,” he said, and with the monkey on his back went back to where the little dog was.

The little dog saw the lion charging at him again. This time faster and much more angry. “Oh boy, I’m in trouble now. That monkey must have squealed on me and made the lion really mad. I don’t stand a chance of survival if I’m not resourceful with the tools I already have and do something quick.”

As the lion gets really close and ready to jump on him, the little dog turned his back to the lion and the monkey and said real loud… “Man, I hate that monkey. I told him half an hour ago to go and grab another lion for me to eat and he’s taking too long.”

The lion heard that, looked at the monkey and killed him.

Take away…

The morale of the story is…You have to be resourceful with the tools you already have and use them to your advantage.

Oftentimes people are waiting for new tools to come out. New websites, new presentations, new marketing systems or whatever, instead of using the tools they already have and taking immediate and massive action.

Getting ready to get ready is getting you nowhere. While you are sitting there waiting for the latest and greatest with all its bells and whistles the competition is going to pass you by.

Take immediate and massive action with whatever tools you have available to you …right now.

To Your Success…

I got up this morning and looked at my “To Do List” for today. It’s not very long, but there are some items on it which I really dislike doing. However, they are important tasks that I need to do in order to move my business forward.

Now, would it really make such a big difference if I just skipped today and had some fun instead? At first thought, no, probably not.

BUT … who is to say that I wouldn’t feel like skipping them again tomorrow? What if tomorrow, I feel the same way as today and I just don’t feel like doing them … again?

That would set me back two days in achieving my goals.

Well, okay, two days. Big deal! What’s all the fuzz about?

I will tell you what the fuzz is about. If I skipped today, and tomorrow, then skipping another couple of days down the road won’t be such a ‘big deal’ either. Do you see a pattern here? It’s the pattern of mediocrity.

Temptation, the mother of breaking the rules …

Just think about it this way. You are on a diet and your kids want you to bake some brownies. You stir up the ingredients, pour the mix in the pan and stick it into the oven. Nothing to it, right?

However, after just a short while the aroma of the baking brownies fills the air and you can hardly wait until they are done.

You think to yourself, “I’m only going to have one. One little brownie isn’t going to make much of a difference.”

You take your first bite and that brownie just melts in your mouth. “Hmmm, delicious!”

“Okay“, you say, “let me have just one more. One more little brownie isn’t going to do any damage.”

And there, in an instant, you blew your diet.

The next day you get on the scale and find out you just had undone what you had been working on so hard all week. Was it worth it? I doubt it.

If you give in once to your temptations, it’s easier to do it a second, a third and a fourth time and so on.

That’s where self-discipline comes in.

You can’t give in!

You’ve got to stick to the plan you’ve laid out to achieving your goals.

You do have a plan, right? I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, …

“If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”

Or, … “If you aim at nothing, you’re sure going to hit it.”

Did you know that only 3% of adults have written goals and plans how to get there? And, they earn more than the other 97% put together.

That is why achieving your goals first requires writing them down on paper and then the self-discipline to work on them on a daily basis. Without skipping even a single day. Of course setting realistic goals makes them a lot easier to achieve.

This post was inspired by a link that dropped into my inbox this morning. An exert of Brian Tracy’s book:

“The Power of Discipline – 7 Ways It Can Change Your Life”

Enjoy reading it. I am sure it will help you in achieving your goals. It sure saved my day.

My last blog post was about the fact that dogs really don’t love bones. (Who would have thought?) They just settle for them. The moral of the story … why would anyone (dogs or humans) settle for less.

Well, there are actually reasons why we are settling for less than we could have and I will illustrate that in another story from the great personal development seminar I attended last weekend.

So here’s the “rest of the story”…The story of Gus, the lab, and the tennis balls

Gus, like all dogs, loves to play with tennis balls. (Our dog Georgi goes nuts over them as well.) So his owner, would bounce a brand new tennis ball a couple of times just to tease Gus and then he would throw it and Gus would go to retrieve it. But he wouldn’t drop it once he brought it back. Instead it would take some prying that ball out of his mouth.

Of course that ball then would be soaked with drool. Yuck!

Anyway, Gus’ owner would throw it again. This time purposely right into the dirt. Gus again would go get it and bring it back. But then, instead of prying that grimy ball out of Gus’ mouth his owner would bounce a brand new tennis ball in the hopes that Gus would drop the one he has in his mouth. Of course he doesn’t. He’s hanging on to that yucky, dirty, slimy ol’ ball.

As a matter of fact, it will take several more throws of that brand new tennis ball before Gus finally will let go of his grimy treasure.

What’s the take away of this story?

That grimy tennis ball symbolizes the limiting beliefs we are sometimes holding on to and which keep us from achieving the success we desire and deserve. It is just easier to hang on to them and use them as an excuse instead of getting rid of them and to take action to change our life.

Such limiting beliefs as…

I am too old to do this business.

I don’t have enough experience.

Rejections from our prospects.

I’m not good enough.

I tried this before without success why would it work now?

I’m not smart enough.

I cannot do this because…

Well, you get the point.

Just think about it. These limiting beliefs are actually what is holding us back from accomplishing our goals and live our dreams. We do deserve better!

We can start overcoming limiting beliefs by silencing that critical little voice inside of our head and start turning negative self-talk into positive self-talk.

The only way we can make room for positive thoughts though is if we drop our negative thoughts (that grimy tennis ball) first.

Go drop your limiting beliefs and fetch some “I Cans”

To your success,

Ilka Flood
The Enlightened Networker

P.S. I tried that game on Georgi this afternoon by the way. And either Georgi is smarter than Gus, or he just doesn’t care about dirty tennis balls. Anyway, he went after the new one every time. Another reason could be of course that Georgi just doesn’t have any limiting beliefs and is just going for the prize every single time. Smart Dog!

P.P.S. If you liked this story and it made sense, please share it with your friends on Twitter or Facebook. Thank you!

I attended an event for my company this weekend and I must admit that was one of the best events I have ever been to. While it did touch on product and company training, it was mostly about personal development and mindset etc., and if you have been following my blog for a while then you know that I absolutely love personal development stuff. The event was amazing and I came away from it a totally changed person.

As a matter of fact it made so much of an impression on me that I would like to share a few of my personal highlights with you in my next couple of blog posts.

As I sat there listening and soaking it all in I noticed that I had actually blogged about some of the stuff that was presented just recently. Sspecially how you can sabotage your own success by stinkin’ thinkin’. So the fact that our CEO and owner of the company brought it up at this network marketing event just reaffirmed the importance of it.

What do you want out of life? Really?

The question was asked, … Do dogs love bones?

Silly question, I thought. Of course dogs love bones. Georgi, our boxer, does. I just brought him some nice rawhide bones from the grocery store last Friday. Man he loves those. As soon as I unloaded the car he went sniffing around all the bags, saliva dripping from his mouth like a faucet, because he knows I always bring him a surprise from the store.

Now imagine this scenario …

Imagine Georgi in a kennel 20 feet (or so) away and I put a big rawhide bone on my right side and a juice t-bone steak on my left. When I open that kennel door and tell him to “go,” where do you think he’s heading to?

You guessed it. Given the choice between a t-bone steak and a big rawhide bone, he’d make a beeline towards that juice t-bone steak every single time. Of course he would. Duh!

So, do dogs love bones?

No, not really. They just settle for bones.

That little parable really made me think.

Why settle for less?

Think about it. Why would anyone be settling for less than they could have? It just doesn’t make sense. Why would you settle for anything less than what you could have in your home based network marketing business? Don’t you deserve to be one of the top distributors in your company? Of course you do. So what is it that is holding you back?

More on that here ….

To your success,
