So, why are there still so many network marketers out there acting like secret agents around their friends, family and others in their circle of influence? Why are so many still not sharing the fact that they own and operate a network marketing business? Maybe they feel that they won’t be taken seriously by those closest to them.

But just think…would you spend a lot of money opening up a beautiful restaurant in a prime location, serving the most delicious food and then not tell anyone that it even exists?

I don’t think so. I bet the first people you would tell would be your family and friends. Right?

I know what you think now. “But, my sponsor told me to make a list of friends and family and I did. Then I approached them with my business opportunity and now nobody is talking to me anymore.”

Trust me, I know the feeling, and so do thousands of other successful network marketers. It’s a typical mistake people new to the network marketing industry make.

Here’s what went wrong ….You “approached people with your business opportunity.”

To stick with the above example of the restaurant that would be the same as asking people to partner up with you in the restaurant business.  But they don’t want to buy a restaurant franchise they just want to enjoy great food.

Instead you should have approached the situation this way…

“Hey uncle Marty, I just opened up a new restaurant downtown. If you know anyone that likes a great barbeque would you mind sending them my way?” Uncle Marty might say, “Hey, I like a good barbeque. Where’s your place located?”

Don’t pitch your network marketing business,
ask for the referral instead.

Here’s another example, relating more to a real network marketing business situation. Let’s say you are marketing a natural product that helps people with high cholesterol. The conversation then would go something like this…

“Hey uncle Marty, I started a new business marketing a natural product that helped me lower my cholesterol. By chance would you know anybody who might be interested in lowering their cholesterol?”

This approach takes the pressure off both of you. Uncle Marty doesn’t feel like he’s being pitched so he doesn’t put his guard up. Instead he’s listening and maybe already thinking of people he knows. And you feel more at ease because you are just asking for a referral.

There really is no need to act like a secret agent because of fear of rejection.  As a matter of fact doing so might cost you a great deal of business.

Did you know that every person has a circle of influence of around 250 people?  This is how many people usually attend a wedding or a funeral.

I actually put this number to the test, because I thought, like so many, “There’s no way I know 250 people.” So I sat down one day and started writing down the names of people that I know …and, who knew me by name as well.

I was really surprised when I came up with a list of 265 names right off the bat without even trying.

So I bet you a soda pop, if you sit down and do the same thing you will come up with at least 250 names as well. How many of these people know what you do? Seriously?!

Takeaway: Start working on that list and let everyone know what you do. Tell them that you are running your own network marketing business. However, stop pitching and start asking for referrals instead. You may be surprised about all the business coming your way.

Imagine for a moment…

You are a Grammy Award winning musician who has played for royalty and sold-out audiences around the world. You normally get paid over $1,000 dollars per minute, but because of a few marketing mistakes you only earn $32 for a 45 minute performance.

This really happened.

Fortunately it didn’t happen by accident, but was an experiment conducted by The Washington Post in 2007.

What was the purpose of this experiment?

To find out if people when they are busy and distracted would notice that something special is taking place, would they be paying attention?

Grammy Award winner Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world, was to play a 45 minute concert in a D.C. subway station at the most busiest time of the day –early morning.  This wasn’t an ordinary street musician. People would fly all over the world to listen to him play. He even played in front of royalty and sold millions of CDs.

On this particular morning he was playing one of the most elegant pieces ever written and he was playing it on a 300 year old Stradivarius valued at $3.5 million dollars and often referred to as the most perfect instrument in existence today.

Watch this! You won’t believe what happened.

Joshua Bell played for 45 minutes. Over 1,000 people walked by him, not even giving him the time of day. Only 7 people stopped to listen.

That would normally have been a $45,000 performance. Instead he only earned $32.

Wow!

From over a thousand people who walked by, there was only one single person who recognized him and said hello. That’s incredible, given his talent and fame!

That’s less than a 1% conversion ratio.

There is a valuable lesson to be learned here about marketing mistakes.

Although this experiment wasn’t meant as a marketing lesson in particular, there’s one in there. A big one! From a marketing point of view, Joshua Bell’s concert in the subway was a complete and absolute disaster.

1) First, his timing was totally off.

At morning rush hour, people are preoccupied and busy. They have only one thing on their mind…their destination, which usually is work.

2) He performed for the wrong target market.

People in a subway usually aren’t the right audience for classical music. And if there were a select few, like the lady who recognized him, they certainly wouldn’t expect a musician of such magnitude as Joshua Bell to perform a concert there. He was totally out of place.

3) No branding.

Nobody knew who he was. No signs, no flyers, no posters, no announcements or third party introductions. Nothing!

What can you learn from these marketing mistakes?

1) Timing is everything!

People are busy. Your fellow networkers are busy. So if you want their undivided attention you have to give some thought to when the best time for your marketing will be.

According to 60 Second Marketer the best day of the week to send out email campaigns is Friday. What a coincidence, I have found this to be the best day to send out blog posts as well.

2) You have to target the right market for your product or service.

Just revisit the example above. Out of over 1,000 people, only 1 person recognized Joshua Bell. If you market to the masses, you will yield the same results.  Not good and very expensive on top of it.

Think about the junk mail that comes through your inbox or in your postal mail box. It is clearly not targeted to a specific niche, is it? It’s a total waste of advertising dollars. You have a much greater chance of making a sale if you target a specific niche, people who search for and want your products or service.

3) Branding is key!

If you want to be successful in your network marketing business then branding is Key. For one, you want to differentiate yourself from your competition. Stand out from the crowd! Be different. Make a name for yourself. You are uniquely YOU and you want to convey that to your audience with your unique selling point.

In time, people will get to know you and connect with you because you have what they want. They will recognize you by your brand and they will recommend and refer you to others.

Success in Network Marketing

Absolutely! If you like it or not your daily activities or lack thereof, greatly influence whether you will have success in network marketing or not. If you are falling short on your goals maybe you should take a closer look and evaluate the reasons why.

Are your daily habits leading to success or failure?

It is very tempting to hop out of bed, firing up your laptop and see if “you’ve got mail.” But starting out your day by checking your email first thing in the morning might not be a good idea. At least this holds true for me.  If I don’t absolutely watch it, I find myself following this link and that link and before I know it it’s two hours later.

What is even worse is that this behavior sets the tone for my entire day. I will be out of focus and procrastinating the rest of the day. I then go to bed at night totally mad and very disappointed in myself because I know better.

Sounds familiar? Not a good thing, is it?

But even if you shoud have some really bad habits, like me, it’s never too late to drop them and develop some new and positive ones.

Here are 6 tips on how you can develop some good habits to help you have success in network marketing…

• Don’t start your day out disorganized and with no real focus and direction.
  Instead make a “To Do List” of your tasks the night before. Organize it by importance, which means the most important task you need to do the next day should be on top. And the least important task should be at the bottom on your list.
• Make it a happy day.
  You’ll get a lot more done if you have a positive mindset instead of being grumpy or in a lousy mood. I know it’s not always possible to jump out of bed with a smile on your face just excited about the new day. So if you happen to have got out of bed on the wrong food, not all is lost yet. Go for a walk. The fresh air will clear your mind and stimulate positive thoughts. Listen to some uplifting music or watch a short inspiring video.
• Don’t procrastinate.
  I know it’s easy to put things off that we dislike doing. But having them ‘hang over our head’ can really cripple our productivity. It’s best to get them out of the way as fast as possible. Brian Tracy recommends to “Eat that Frog.”  

  “Procrastination is attitude’s natural assassin. There is nothing so fatiguing as an uncompleted task.” William James

• Grow your knowledge.
  Successful network marketers always feed their minds. They are constantly learning new things, methods, strategies and so on. So make it a habit to learn something new every day, even if it is just a new word. Just think, within a year you will have broadened your vocabulary by 365 new words.
• Grow your network.
  Your success in network marketing can only be as large as your network. So make it a habit to grow it every day. Make the aquaintence of somebody new each day. Connect on Facebook or grow your Twitter account. Reach out to someone and lend a helping hand. Build those all-important relationships of know, like and trust.
• Avoid or limit time wasters.
  Email and social networks can really suck your time. So be sure to set a time limit for those activities. 10 to 15 minutes at a time should be sufficient enough to check your inbox, update your status and reply to messages. If you don’t get it all done in that time, carry it over to your next scheduled time slot for those tasks.

I heard someone recently say, “every time Google sneezes, we are catching a cold.” Did you? Catch a cold I mean? If you were affected by Google’s recent algorithm changes you may give thought to an often over-looked backlink strategy called “blog commenting.”

Trying to get more backlinks to my blog I had just started article marketing when Google made some changes to try and eliminate “content farm” pages such as EzineArticles.com and other article directories. I can’t really blame Google for trying to clean up search engine results because in the end it’s about quality, not quantity.  So, is article marketing dead now? I don’t think so, but it sure took quite a hit.

Still, trying to get a grip on the ever-changing SEO strategies and finding a way to get good quality backlinks I remembered a blog post I wrote a while back about “A Fun Way To Get Free Backlinks.”

Commenting on other people in your niche’s blogs and allowing commenting on your own blog is a great way to get quality backlinks.

If you have not implemented blog commenting as a backlink strategy yet, here are a few tips.

1. First of all, allow commenting on your blog. (If you have a WordPress blog you do this under Settings > > Discussion.)
2. Have an anti-spam plugin installed that takes care of spam comments. I used to have Akismet (as it comes as default with WordPress) and a Captcha plugin but ran into the problem that Akismet sometimes flagged legitimate comments as spam and deleted them before I ever saw them. So I installed a great little anti-spam plugin that works like a charm and is much easier to use for my visitors.
3. Make it easy for people to comment on your blog posts. Sometimes I visit great blogs with very valuable content but I can’t leave a comment because I have to be registered and logged in. This will deter many visitors from leaving a comment. I know, because it stops me from leaving my feedback.
4. Make your blog a dofollow blog. What does this mean? If you have a WordPress blog it is set to nofollow by default.  In other words, if a person leaves a comment he or she gets no link juice from the search engines because they do not follow that link. I feel if someone leaves a great comment on my blog they deserve some link love. Don’t you agree? So by changing your blog from the default nofollow to dofollow every time someone leaves a comment they will get link juice back to their own site. I am using a great plugin that takes care of that for me.
5. Make sure you reply to each and every comment left on your blog. Even if it’s only a short “thanks for commenting” because, that shows the search engines that there’s someone home. So definitely reply to comments and always make sure you add value…even in leaving your replies.
6. Give back to your readers by installing the CommentLuv plugin and give some link love to those who take the time to leave you their feedback.

Just think, every time you leave a comment on somebody else’s blog you will get a link back to your own provided that it is a dofollow blog of course. By the same token, if you yourself have a dofollow blog people who leave comments on your blog also get a backlink back to their sites. So having a dofollow blog actually encourages blog commenting.

So, can you see how blog commenting is a great backlink strategy?

Overcoming Objections with Feel, Felt, Found

Overcoming objections is one of the top business skills you need to learn how to master in your mlm home based business.

I know I struggled with this issue when I first started.  But then someone introduced me to “Feel, Felt, Found” a really cool method to overcome objections.

It is only natural that people have objections when they are confronted with something new and unfamiliar. It is our job as their future sponsor to help them overcome these objections. Oftentimes the objections we hear from our prospects aren’t even real, but more of a way to say “hey, I’m not ready for this,” without actually coming out and saying it.

“Feel, felt, found” lets you empathize with your prospect. Most likely you were in their shoes at one time and you can relate to what they are going through.

Here are some examples of the most common objections we may hear….

“I don’t have the time to do this business.”

“I don’t have the money.”

“I have to think about it.”

“I don’t want to be locked into a monthly commitment (autoship.)”

“I don’t like MLM, Network Marketing.”

“I have to ask my husband.”

All of these objections can be overcome with “FEEL, FELT, FOUND”

For example…

“Mary, I totally understand how you feel about not having the time to do this business. I felt the same way. But then I found that it only takes a few hours a week to get things started…”

“I understand your concern about the monthly autoship, Bill, and know how you feel. I felt the same way. But then I found that I actually ran out of the product before it was time for the next autoship to come around … that I really needed to set a good example for the team I was building and therefore needed to be on autoship…“

“I appreciate how you feel about having to think about it, Sue. I felt the same way. But then I found the sooner I started the sooner I would reach my dream of … (fill in the blank.)”

See how this feel, felt, found approach works overcoming objections? You are actually relating to the prospect. Making them feel better about having these objections, because you let them know that you felt the same way at some point but you found a solution to overcome objections like the ones they may be having.

Overcoming objections is just something that comes with the territory of having a mlm home based business. But applying the method of feel, felt, found makes it a lot easier to handle.

I truly believe this, as from my own experience I know that “Plan A” doesn’t work. Our family had to find out what it meant to go from a paycheck to zero from one day to the next. There is no such thing as “Job Security” and there hasn’t been for a very long time.

"Rinse and Repeat" Formula for a Successful Network Marketing Business

So, just what is this formula for a successful network marketing business?

It’s been said, that our habits predict our future. I believe that to be true. How about you?

Have you ever noticed that the more you do something the better you get at doing it? You can take anything in life and you will see that there is actually some truth to it.

Remember when you first learned to ride a bike?

You were wobbly. You knuckles turned white because you were holding on to those handle bars for dear life. You prayed that your dad (or mom, or whoever was holding on to the bike to keep you stable and give you support) wouldn’t let go.

You practiced every day and every day you got better. And then came the day when you were practicing again, and you turned around and there was nobody holding on to you anymore. You were riding that bike all by yourself.

At first that scared you and may have caused you into ‘wobbling mode’ for just a few seconds. But then you regained your confidence and you were enjoying the ride. A proud feeling of accomplishment came over you. You did it!

Now when you get on a bike you don’t even think about what you are doing. It’s just automatic.

It can be the same in your network marketing business.

You may be totally overwhelmed, pulled into different directions. Everybody and their brother telling you what to do and how to do it. (You’re in wobbling mode.)

But when you get really down to it, it’s quite simple. Just like riding a bike. Focus on the basics.

There are certain tasks that you must accomplish every day in order to reach your goal of running a successful network marketing business. Some of them may be new to you and may require a certain amount of practice. But by practicing them every day, you will get better.

“Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.” ~ Zig Ziglar

So what’s the formula for a successful network marketing business?

1. Identify the tasks you absolutely have to do every day in order to move your business forward.
2. Do them in order of priority. (Life happens, so do the most important tasks first, just in case.)
3. Practice those tasks that need perfecting.
4. Rinse and repeat

Stick to that formula no matter what. Put your blinders on if you have to in order to keep from getting distracted. I know there are many distractions out there. All I have to do is open my email inbox and there are tons of them…But…

Repeating important activities that move your business forward on a daily basis is the key to a successful network marketing business.

They say it takes 21 days to form a habit.

I don’t know how they came up with 21 days but it seems to work. So write down what you need to do every day. Do it for 21 days and see what happens. (Of course keep going after that.) There is power in positive habits.

Just keep your focus right on your target and you will get there.

Don't Assume Anything About Your Propect

Have you ever totally ‘messed up’ a meeting or conversation with a prospect? I mean, it seemed so promising. And then you got into your car to drive home (or you hung up the phone) and you thought to yourself, “man, I totally messed this one up”. What the heck happened?”

Could it have been that you have been “assuming” things about your prospect?

Someone once gave me the definition of “assume” and it’s not the one found in the dictionary or Wikipedia.  It goes like this …

ASS-U-ME = When you assume something you are making an ASS out of U and ME.

Yes, it’s a bit strong language and I normally don’t talk that way but … it hits the point spot on. Don’t assume things about people. Especially those you don’t know or have just met.

When we assume something about our prospects we come to false conclusions which can lead to misunderstandings, non-understanding and mis-communication. And that messes everything up.

Also, how often do we say to people, “I know exactly what you’re thinking?”

How can we know what someone is thinking? We only know what we ourselves are thinking. We could assume (there’s that word again) what someone may be thinking based on certain circumstances or our own experiences, but then again, that would get us exactly to what I mentioned above.

So the best thing to do when meeting a prospect for the first time, either in person or on the phone is to ASK QUESTIONS. Ask lots of questions.

The more questions we ask the better we get to know our prospect and the better we can assess what his or her needs are.

That’s what we’re there for.  That’s our job. To find out what our prospects problems are and then find a solution to fix them. We can’t do that by assuming but only by asking questions.

So do yourself a favor, don’t assume anything.

If Elephants Could Change Their Mindsets ...

Urban legend has it that elephants are afraid of mice. Well, that’s not really true. Elephants are actually one of the more fearless animals in the world and they also have an excellent memory.  However, they are not the brightest creatures or they would realize that they could kick the stake they are tied or chained to (at the zoo or circus) into next week if they wanted to.

You see, elephants are tied to stakes as babies and no matter how hard they pull and tuck they can’t get loose. I already mentioned the incredible memory elephants have. So even when they are fully grown they remember that they couldn’t escape when they were tied down when they were little so they figure they still can’t and don’t even try.

Good thing we aren’t elephants.

We are humans and as such we know better. We know we can change if we set our mind to it.

I wasn’t brought up in an environment where personal development skills seemed important. My husband on the other hand was always reading or listening to tapes to improve himself. If you checked out his library you would find your usual big name personal development authors and trainers.

It all changed when I started getting into network marketing.

I found that I didn’t have the skills I needed to be an entrepreneur. Being street smart is good, but not enough. Now I can’t get my hands on enough personal development training and my own library keeps growing. I realized how important it is to work on “YOURSELF” instead of anything else. You can’t give what you don’t have.

Although network marketing is now taught on some colleges, most of us didn’t have any formal training when we got started. So we had to acquire the skills it takes to become an entrepreneur from somewhere else. And so will you if you want to be successful in this industry.

First and foremost you will have to work on your “employee” mindset.

If you have been working a job for the past 10 plus years, than you probably have the mindset of an employee. You are usually told what to do by your boss or supervisor and you just do it. And when you do you will get paid. If you don’t you get fired. Pretty simple!

However, it’s totally different when you become an entrepreneur.

There is nobody to tell you what to do or how to do it. Now you are the boss and YOU are responsible for the actions you take … or don’t take. If you work your business you will get a commission check and your business will grow. If you don’t work it, …well, then you will soon be out of business. It takes a lot of discipline, self-motivation, consistency, persistence and perseverance to run your own business.

Just simply making the switch from employee to entrepreneur and expecting to be successful just doesn’t work.

You will have to switch your mindset as well.  You will have to develop a mindset of a millionaire. (Because, your business has the potential to eventually grow into a million dollar business.) And you will have to pick up some very important business and leadership skills. That’s where personal development comes in.

In network marketing you are not just responsible for yourself but also for the people you sponsor.

You work as a team. Developing leadership skills is vital for your business. Thank goodness there is plenty of personal development material out there. There are books, CDs, videos, webinars, blogs, etc. You just need to make the time to work on yourself and develop the skills you need to be successful. It will be time and money well spend.

You don’t have to be the elephant tied to the stake, you can break loose and reach the success you desire. All you have to do is change your mindset and work on yourself.

“An army of lions led by a lamb will always be defeated by an army of lambs led by a lion”.

Developing Leadership Skills Can Be Learned

Or are you just going through the motions because you are not ready to quit just yet?

So, how about it? How’s your commitment to business?

For your network marketing business to give you the success you desire it takes a 100% commitment from you. Don’t treat it like a hobby. Treat it as a million dollar business because that’s what it really is. Even if you paid a low entrance fee and your monthly commitment (autoship) is very low. Eventually your business - if you treat it in a professional manner – will become a million dollar business.

If you are truly committed, trust me, you will reach your goals.

Okay, so right now you may have hit a snag and you really have your doubts.

I know how it feels. I’ve been there. The key is not to give in. Doubts can stop you right in the tracks and they can even kill your business if you let them. If you are having doubts, get to the root of them and find out why.

Why are you doubting? Do you think you just can’t do it?

Take a look at the top leaders in your company. How do you think they got there? Are these people so very different from you?  If you really look at them, I don’t think they are so different. They just posses more leadership qualities and skills than you do right now. But that can be learned.

I bet if you had a chance to meet them and sit down and have a chat, they would give you several reasons why they got to where they are.

• They have a “Can Do” attitude.
• They surround themselves with leaders, with successful people who walked the path before them.
• They have a library of self-development books and actually read them.
• They are not afraid (or too proud) to ask questions.
• They stepped out of their comfort zone and said good bye to F.E.A.R (False Expectiations Appearing Real).
• They learned everything possible about their company and products so they can talk intelligently to prospects.
• They have built great relationships over time and have a list of people they can draw from for referrals.
• They have a plan and work it.
• They know that in order to succeed they will have to fail.

To become a good leader you must first become a good follower. Start by finding a great mentor and then really start listening and implementing what he or she teaches you.
