Create a Twitter List in Hootsuite

Create a Twitter List in Hootsuite

I had created a Twitter list for different groups on TweetDeck and it worked great in keeping everything organized, but for some reason I never got around to do the same on HootSuite. Well until today that is.

If you have been on Twitter for a while and you are following a lot of people, you know that it can be hard to keep up with everyone and chances are that you are missing a lot of tweets. Creating a twitter list for different groups helps you keep things organized.

Frankly, if you use twitter for business marketing you want to make sure to keep in touch with your contacts. You probably remember the” know, like, trust” factor. Building a relationship with your contacts, customers and business associates is so very important. Twitter helps you keep connected.

Why would you want to create a Twitter list?

The main reason would probably be so you can filter the tweets of people you are following into categories. By creating shorter lists you will be better able to monitor them. You can create a list for family, friends, customers, people in your company, gurus you follow, etc.

So how do you create a Twitter list within Hootsuite?

It’s quite simple actually. Just follow the three simple steps below.

1) Log in to your HootSuite account and click on “Add Stream” just like the picture shows below.

2) Make sure “Twitter” is selected (highlighted in blue) and then click on “Lists.”

3) If you have multiple Twitter accounts select the profile you want to use to add a new twitter list. You can either use an existing list or create a new one. Give your list a name and choose if you want it to be public or private and click “Create Stream.”

Congratulations,  you are done! You just created a new twitter list in your Hootsuite account.

Wasn’t that easy?

Have fun adding lists to your account!

Hi Ilka :)

Thanks for sharing the clear and concise tutorial.

Many say that the money is in the email list, but there’s plenty of $$$ in the twitter list to. As you note it allows you to focus and build relationships.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Ryan,

I agree with you. You can definitely have more than one list. Actually, the more the better. A good idea would be though if you have multiple lists, to channel them all to one central hub.

You have a wonderful weekend too!

Thanks for the info. I’m a pretty new HootSuite user and liking it so far, it’s much more simple and cleaner than TweetDeck so far.

Hi again Henway,

You’re right, Hootsuite seems to be cleaner than Tweetdeck. It might just be a visual thing because Tweetdeck has that dark background :)

Have a great weekend!

Hi Ilka!

Such an easy read and a much easier tutorial!

I actually have a Twitter list that I keep on Twitter but I haven’t tried it on Hootsuite yet. This could just be one of the solutions that could really help me centralize everything!

Thanks!

Hi Elmar,

Thanks!

The lists you have on Twitter are the same ones you “import” to Hootsuite when you select “use existing list.” The nice part of having those lists in Hootsuite is you can keep up with them easier than on Twitter because they are right there for you when you login to your Hootsuite account. On Twitter you have to take that extra step of actually clicking on them and then you only see one at a time.

Enjoy your weekend!

Hi Soren,

Yeah, the interface on Hootsuite sure is different from Tweetdeck. It’s all a matter of taste, I think.

If you try it let me know how you like it :)

Cheers and have a great week!

I didn´t even know that Hootsuite exists and I am really not good in Twitter.

It´s exactly how you wrote.

I miss the important messages all the time because there is such a huge amount of information coming through every second.

Thanks for this post!

It has opened my eyes!

Take care

Hi Volker,

I can so relate :)

Twitter is definitely a “fast mover” so getting organized should help tremendously. Of course, you need to set up those lists on Twitter first and then import them into Hootsuite :)

You can do it!

From the list of to your own list of people who make you laughit s easy to see how this feature increases discovery and adds value in lots of ways. Lists also make it easier to curate tweets into meaningful real-time experiences on your own sites via the Lists API. Anyone can curate and publish lists so if you have an idea for one just click New list in the sidebar of your Twitter account and you re on your way.

Hey Ilka,

Twitter used to be too noisy for me and I would ignore it and focus on other ventures.

I’ve started looking into it now and the tips about the list comes handy.

Thanks!
