Google Changes: How Can You Benefit?

| Posted in SEO |

30

Google Changes The news spread across the internet like wildfire. Almost 28% of all websites where impacted by the recent Google changes also known as “Google Slap.” Guess Google just reached a point of having enough of people trying to manipulate the search engines by taking advantage of bots, link farms, article submission sites, etc.

I can’t say I blame them. Have you ever read articles written by bots. It’s pure chunk. But a lot of those articles made it on the first page of Google leaving others with relevant and valuable content in the dust. Never underestimate the power of Google. You may be able to ride the wave for a little while, but Google is an expert in recognizing the “footprint” and they will shut you down if they catch you “gaming the system.”

So how can you benefit from the recent Google changes?

It’s actually quite simple. Just give Google what it wants. Keep it happy!

There are 3 things Google is looking for specifically.

Relevance – Fresh and Original Content – Popularity

1) Relevance

Choose keywords that are relevant to your content. You would think that’s obvious, but have you ever entered a keyword into the search engine and then landed on a page that had absolutely nothing to do with it? After you have decided on your keyword or keyword phrase make sure it shows up in the headline, first paragraph, sprinkled throughout your content and in your last paragraph.

2) Fresh and Original Content

It really helps to have a SEO friendly website. Google actually prefers WordPress and is looking for fresh, relevant and original content. Not pre-written content or template based websites.

When writing a blog post make sure it exceeds 250-300 words. This is a big part of the Google changes. It’s best to keep it around 400-500 words. Of course some of your posts can be longer or shorter.  Just try to keep about 60% of your blog posts at least at 400 words.

3) Popularity

Google now places a lot more emphasis on how popular your site is. How long do people stay? Where did they come from? Where do they go after leaving your site? Social media is playing more and more of a role. Maybe you have heard that Google has been trying to get into the social media game for a while now. They have been keeping a close eye on Facebook and just recently introduced Google +1 which is much like the Facebook “like” button.

So how can you keep your visitors on your site longer?

One way to do this is by interlinking, which means using an anchor text enhanced link to send your visitor to a related post on your site. Make sure you use a keyword or key phrase you want to rank for in your anchor text.

Here’s a little secret: Take pages that are already ranking well on Google and improve their positions by interlinking using your keyword.

Another way to make your post more popular is by inserting your own videos. Google loves YouTube. Make sure you link back to your website. Turn a blog post into a video. Your video is much more likely to rank #1 than just a text-based post and if you link back to your post it’s a win-win situation. Google favors video because it’s authentic and can’t be duplicated by spambots like text-based content.

Are there going to be more Google changes in the near future?

There’s a lot of chatter that Google will be adding social media seo into their algorithm. Do you have a Fan Page? Are people “liking” you? Is it updated regularly? Does it contain your keywords?

All this is part of the ongoing Google changes and there will be a lot more coming down the pipe. I don’t know if you heard that Google just bought PostRank.com, a site that tracks social engagement across the web. It tracks what’s going on on Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites and delivers real-time data and analysis on any topic, trend, or interest relevant to you or your business.

Google is definitely busy coming up with and implementing a lot of changes. I know it can be hard to keep up, but the bottom line is if you give Google what it wants then you shouldn’t have any problems to get a page one ranking.

What are your thoughts about these Google changes?

Did you feel the impact of the recent Google changes. Where you among the 28% of sites that felt the “Google Slap?”

If you have any thoughts about this topic I sure would love to hear your feedback in the comments below. Let us know what you think.

Hi Ilka,

thanks for sharing your insights. I am far from being a SEO expert. What I can see that Google is a moving target. That means, if we try to aim at this moving target, it might have been moved the moment we shoot. Or at least it becomes very stressful, like day trading with stocks.

With that being said, I embrace these changes who provide authentic, genuine and fresh contact – and are engaged throughout the web. We can make less hype about Google and single tricks to game them.

Take care

Hi Oliver,

Oh, I am not an expert on SEO either. As a matter of fact, I kind of find it hard to keep up these days. Especially with the “moving target” of Google how you so appropriately put it.

But really, Oliver, do we have a choice as marketers? We need to keep up, don’t we?

Have an awesome evening!

Google is recognizing the importance of social media impact. It’s the right move in the right direction by the search engine giant by considering social popularity enjoyed by the content while considering the search ranking.

Hi Online Strategies,

I agree with you on the point of taking social media (social interaction, popularity of the site, etc.) into consideration in search results.

However, I’m not so sure if Google should be moving further into the social media arena. Time will tell how Google + will fair.

Thank you so much for visiting and leaving your thoughts!

Hey Ilka,

another great article of you!

More and more I discover the real secret of Google for the long-term:

be authentic – just do what you do for your readers and customers – not for Google.

Why?

Because at the end of the day I want to earn real money – no fake and no copied money :-)

Hey Volker,

Thanks for your thoughts! I absolutely agree on having your readers and customers in mind first. Bots and spiders will never buy anything from you :)

I would love to see more value-packed posts written with heart instead of SEO in mind on the first page of Google. Think that will happen now?

Hi Ilka,

I must say I like the idea of Google being more balanced as long as this allows one to lean to one or the other sides more without being penalized.

Some people do prefer to be more SEO oriented and others are almost exclusively social media oriented.

I think they are so different and suit different personality types that I would hate to see Google manipulating us in anyway.

This all said, it’s a good idea to weed out all the bot drivel that should not be on the first page of search results if it is not delivering value and usually it doesn’t.

Thanks for sharing your insights.

Hi Marcus,

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being SEO oriented as long as the person isn’t gaming the system. If it’s done ethically, there’s absolutely no harm.

I do like the emphasis on social interaction, because (in my mind) it goes right along with “word-of-mouth” advertising. Usually if something is popular and there’s a lot of “chatter” people do take a closer look and eventually buy. Don’t you think?

Have a fabulous weekend!

Absolutely Ilka. Viral marketing is in my opinion more powerful than anything and because people like to be sheep (in this case good for us I suppose) they all follow the herd and do what the rest do.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Hi Rowena,

Welcome to my blog! It’s great to meet you.

Yes, Google is starting to place a lot more emphasis on social media in searches now. They are coming up with all kinds of things. It started with the Google + 1 button, now it’s Google + and no telling where it will go from here :)

I’m sure I will write some updates on that in the future so please come back.

Have a fabulous weekend!

P.S. Thanks for following me on Twitter….and by the way, you can find my Fan Page in the sidebar to the right ===>

Mmm… This is interesting Stuff Ilka and to be honest I am happy about the changes Google is making!

Conspiracy theories aside, Google’s aim is to provide users with the best quality and most relevant content possible, so following your advice here is absolutely the way to stay on top.

I like your suggestions about ‘Page Rank Sculpting’ by interlinking from other pages – one great way to do this is with links to the sites you want to promote in your sidebar…

Thanks Ilka, you’re ahead of the curve as ever, and that’s what it takes – Google is changing the goal posts constantly and not to be aware of what’s happening is to fall behind…

Hi Jym,

I am very happy (now) as well. At first I was a bit upset about the “Google Slap” because I didn’t know where it was going with it. I was just getting my feet wet in article marketing and felt I was being punished. Once I realized that the changes Google made actually will benefit me if I just follow the rules and give them what they want I was very happy :)

I believe it was Mavis who introduced me to “interlinking.” Now you brought up an interesting point…linking to sites you want to promote in your sidebar? Why is that and what would be the benefit? (Hey that would make a great blog topic for you :) )

Have a fabulous weekend!

Thanks for that idea Ilka – I may well make a post out of this! here’s a brief explanation for now:

Links in the sidebar to the posts you want to improve the rank of is just one way to build links to your posts.

In a text widget in the sidebar you’d put links to 4 or 5 posts. Title it something like ‘popular posts’ or ‘Ilka recommends’.

That widget will appear on every page of your blog – say you have 100 pages, that’s 100 links pointing to each of those 4 or 5 posts, and on a blog like yours, some of those links are coming from pages which have some Page Rank.

There you go – instant links to boost the pages which you want to rank. It’s not a total solution, but it can make a healthy difference!

Hi Ilka,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I for one am very pleased with the changes that seem to be being brought about by Google. Having put a lot of work into my own website as a DIY webmaster, and followed many the SEO and backlinking tips I could find online, I have seen my Google Page Rank jump from 1 to 4 this month. Not bad for a novice hey. Like with everything in life, I don’t always go for the quick fix or cheat, the too good to be true is never a good strategy to adopt. It is good that Googles Search Engine has the ability to route out the less relevant/useful sites and provide the real content the user is looking for, and also justifies my own approach, (as a novice), to SEO.

Poop, the page rank jump only lasted a couple of weeks before dropping to 2, still better than the original – but strange nontheless as it isn’t usually updated within such a short timescale – anyone else had a similar experience? SERPs is still very good for our chosen keywords and locality though.

[Reply]

If Google keeps changing their features every now and then, there is still a possibility that they will upgrade their system since millions of people are using the site. Nevertheless, it is for the betterment of everyone.

[Reply]

I love Google! And I believe that they will make some changes still with their applications especially now that the number of users is increasing.

[Reply]

I think it doesn’t change what we do as search marketers, it just means we have to do more! consider more variables and change our techniques based on the changing face of internet trends.

We’ve got to be thinking about personalisation, social media, we’ve also got to be thinking about best practices so we fit into the machine learned elements of this new update.

It’s all really exciting – must admit I’m still not 100% sure where to start!!!

Hi Ilka!

Google’s changes are keeping us on our toes. Just when we think we already got it made, Google literally “slaps” us in the face with new “things.” Well, trust Google to catch us by surprise everytime!

Good outline you mentioned here, Ilka. We cannot just overemphasize the importance of relevance when writing content. I’m glad you mentioned about the number of words, too. That, too, is quite important. (I have to brush up on my number of words hereon as I usually write for 350).

Ahhh Google. I agree – It had to be done.

If the goal of Google is to provide Internet users with relevant information – then what they did was a good thing. Get rid of the junk and keep the relevant, original, and popular content towards the top. :)

I think working on popularity is one of the best ways to appear important in the eyes of Google. But – one of the most difficult…
