What is Google +1 and Can It Help You Gain An Unfair Advantage Over Your Competition?

Google Plus 1

Google Plus 1

You may have been hearing the buzz going around the internet about Google +1, also referred to as “Google Plus 1″, but haven’t quite figured out what it actually is and how it works.  Don’t worry, you are not alone.  Until just recently I didn’t have the slightest idea what it is either.

My good friend Elmar Sandyck wrote a blog post about it a little while back and since I wasn’t quite able to wrap my head around this new technology I went on and did some more research on the subject.

Most likely you are familiar with Facebook’s “Like” button.

“The Like button lets a user share your content with friends on Facebook. When the user clicks the Like button on your site, a story appears in the user’s friends’ News Feed with a link back to your website.”

It’s actually pretty cool!

Google has wanted to get in on the “Social Media” game for a while and has been jealously watching Facebook. So now they created their own “like button” and put their own little spin on it.

The advantage that Google has over Facebook is that they are a search engine. People go there to perform searches. That’s what they’re good at.

So what exactly is the Goolge +1 button?

Right now it is still in beta testing, but basically it works like follows…

While you are logged in to your Google profile, perform a search and see if there’s a +1 button. If there is, click on it and it will be saved to your Google profile. If your profile is public you can also share it with anyone who has a Google profile.

Like I said, right now it is still in beta testing, but as it becomes more popular you can scroll through your results and see how many people clicked on the +1 button and even who amongst your friends or connections have clicked +1.

So what’s the big deal with Google +1?

There has been no hard evidence but rumors as well as subtle hints, that eventually Google’s algorithm will be connected to the +1 button. (As they say …”where there is smoke, there is fire.”)

What does that mean?

It means, the more people click on the +1 button (in other words, cast their vote for the particular site or page) the higher that page ranks in the search engine. Or…the easier it is to get on the first page of Google.

How can you be part of the Google +1 experiment?

The first thing you need to do (if you haven’t already) is to get a Google profile. It’s very easy to set up, just follow the instructions.

Once you do have your Google profile, sign up for the +1 Button Experiment.

Just click on “Join this experiment” and you’re done.

Google Plus 1 Button

Then just go ahead and do as Google suggests. Go to the web. Find sites that you like, vote for them by clicking on +1 buttons and add them to your profile. You can start with clicking on your own sites and pages …or mine, hint, hint. (If you +1 any of my pages let me know and I will reciprocate.) Make sure you are logged in to your Google Profile when you do this.

This is very powerful, as Google is combining search with social media. I already mentioned above that this will impact your ranking eventually if the rumors going around are indeed true.

So how will Google Plus 1 help you get an unfair advantage
over your competition?

How many friends do you have on Facebook?

How many people are following you on Twitter?

Just think about what would happen if you asked those people to help you out and vote for your content by clicking the +1 button?

Google Plus One

Do you think it would make a difference?

It’s all about popularity!

If enough people think your content is valuable and they vote for it by clicking the +1 button, Google will see that and rank your content accordingly.

Oh the possibilities!

So, have you had any experience with Google +1 yet? If so please share it with us in the comments below. I always love your feedback.
To Your Success…

Hi Ilka!

This post of yours is really a great supplement to the articles I wrote on the same topic!

I liked that you expanded it to include the Google +1 experiment and gave us a step-by-step guide on how to avail of this latest feature from Google. Just like you, I just couldn’t wait to explore its many possibilities.

Let’s keep each other updated. As always!

Hi Elmar,

How in the world could I have forgotten to backlink to your post. I bow my head in shame. I quickly corrected it though. Actually it was in my original draft but then I made some changes and forgot to re-add it.

Guess I need to read some more of your “Good Manners” posts :)

Thanks for your feedback, Elmar! I truly appreciate it.

Hi Tosin,

Haha, you always make me chuckle. Thanks! :)

Tosin, to make this work you have to be logged in to your Google account. (So if you don’t have one yet set one up.)

Once you are logged in click to join the experiment using the link above in my post. After that conduct a search for anything on Google and it should work.

Let us know what you think.

Hi Ilka,

You are always finding something new to share these days Ilka. I can hardly keep up with you. Ha ha

I had seen Google +1 about but not known anything about it so was interested to read your post.

I did join the experiment and looked for the +1 symbol on my profile but could not see it. I am obviously not doing something right as I am not seeing this show up on my Google searches. It is 1am so maybe I need to re-look at this in the morning. LOL

I see from the graphic in your post that you have =1′d my blog, thank you. :)

I will certainly return the favour when I have got it to work.

Thanks for keeping me up to date. :)

Hi Marcus,

Actually I can’t take any credit for finding this one. Elmar just recently wrote a post about it and then I learned more on the subject by attending a webinar, taking great notes and doing some additional research.

By the way, when you do your searches, make sure you are logged in to your Google account …or you won’t see the +1 button :)

Let us know if it worked.

Hi Ilka!

I had heard about Google +1, and wonder if the source of the rumors isn’t Google planting it themselves. =)

I’m already signed up, and I’ve given you a +1 already! It was super easy and awesome! While I was at it, I also gave a +1 to Brankica’s site since she’s full of win, too.

Hi Ilka,
From the way you described it, Google +1 is a cool concept. It puts search results listing back in the hand of the consumer. The top search spots will go to those sites that other people have found genuinely helpful with honest user to user recommendations. Thanks for the great overview here.

thanks so much for sharing this.

I need to bring my Google Profile upto date to tell you the truth. Haven’t looked at it for quite some time. I will do that shortly and see if I can see the +1.

Thanks so much for the terrific detail and explanation.

by the way, Ilka.. just thought about his as I hit the ‘send’ … I really don’t think the +1 will give us an unfair advantage to be honest.

I think Google is all about reader solutions. There will be many people who don’t know about +1… and besides there are some really busy sites who are not ‘trendy’ or techie at all… yet they have skads of traffic because they have a loyal readership.

I can’t see Google not knowing that we are not going to +1 our friends… personally…

I think they are a little more ‘up’ on things than to not be in the know of how we humans tick! LOL

Thats just my opinion, but Lord knows, I have been known to be wrong! LOL

Hi Jayne,

I’m a tad confused about “I can’t see Google not knowing that we are not going to +1 our friends… personally…

Here’s the way I see it … Google is going to pay attention to the sites that are going to get +1ed. Because they want to give their searchers what the want and they want to give them the best possible solution.

Of course it doesn’t make sense to +1 a site just because that person is your friend. It has to have genuine VALUE. If I don’t find value on a site or blog post I don’t +1 it.

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving me your valuable comments!

Hi Ilka, I can see how my comment isn’t clearly describing the thoughts on this that roll around my head like marbles…

I guess I was hinging my response around the ‘unfair’ factor.

In other words I don’t think that just because +1 exists and some get +1′d that they will have the ‘unfair’ advantage.

I wouldn’t +1 anyone either if I didn’t think they had value, nor would I expect to be +1′d back. :-)

I feel it sounds like a great little feature… but I also feel … and guess I can’t stop thinking there will be many layers to their algorythm surrounding it, to ensure there is a ‘fair’ … rather than unfair advantage.

I don’t know if that’s shed any light to the workings of my cogs on this or not…

It was just something that ‘struck’ my thoughts on it based on the title and the questions it asks.

Hi,

To answer your question …actually you answered it yourself. Yes, Google has the advantage to be a search engine.

So when people +1 your content they not only give it their vote of approval but it also gives you a boost in the search engines.

Have a great weekend!
