Are You Settling For Mediocrity Or Are You Going For the Gold?

| Posted in Personal Development |

Olympic FlagUsually I don’t watch a whole lot of TV, but now with the Olympic Games going on I do find myself watching it a bit more.  I especially love the swimming and gymnastics, and well, some of the running too, and I am just amazed about these young people’s performances.

The background stories that are shared about the athletes are just amazing and I am in awe about the tremendous sacrifices these young people have brought in order to make it to London and perform on the world stage of sports … the Olympics.

It took many, many years of blood, sweat and tears and of denying themselves what others take for granted.  Each and every one of them pushed themselves to the very limit.

Like Ryan Lochte said in his TV commercial … “Luck didn’t get me here…I swam here.”

Success doesn’t come easy, neither at the Olympics nor in network marketing. You can’t hope for success; you can’t wish for success; you will have to work for success.

So what can we learn from these
outstanding athletes?

Here are eight points every single one of these Olympians takes to heart… and you should too:

  1. Train Daily! – There is not one single athlete performing in London right now who has not spent countless hours at the gym, in the pool on the track or wherever they train. You need to work on your business daily as well. Even if you can just work it part time, a few hours here and there.
  2. Schedule Workout! – Athletes schedule their workouts and they never miss a single one. You too need to make a list of the tasks you need to do every day with the most important one at the top.  And don’t go to bed before you marked the last one off the list. (Repeat the next day.)
  3. Get a Training Partner! – Athletes get a training partner who supports and encourages them as well as holds them accountable. You should do the same. Get an accountability partner and let them know your goals so he or she can hold you accountable to them. It is a lot less likely that you will cheat if you have to report to someone else.
  4. Don’t Switch Sports! – Michael Jordan switched from basketball to baseball but found out that he wasn’t that good at it. Stick with what you do best, where your talents are and focus on one thing at a time. That means building one company at a time, even if you are involved in more than one opportunity. Maybe you have a primary and a secondary business (one that compliments your main business), but make sure your focus is on your primary business until it runs itself.
  5. Push Past the Pain! – Athletes push past the pain. Yes, things get hard at times, even down right brutal in the network marketing business, but you can’t give up. You need to keep going even if it hurts, if you get disappointed or if you are frustrated because things are not going the way you would like them to. Unfortunately that’s part of the game. No pain, no gain!
  6. Take a Day Off! – Athletes take a rest to regroup and regain their strength. You can’t keep going like the Energizer Bunny or you will burn out. So take some time off, step away from business and enjoy life.
  7. Ignore Negativity! – Athletes don’t listen to negativity. They block out negative talk and focus on the positive. You should do the same. Ignore the naysayers, keep away from people who try to bring you down and surround yourself with positive people, people who encourage you and who lift you up.
  8. Never give up! – Athletes never give up.  They know what they want. They go through rigorous training to get it. They keep focusing on their ultimate goal and they just go for it.  You should do the same. Never, ever quit!

One more thing…

Never settle for average or mediocrity. You are worth more than that and you deserve the best! So go for the ultimate prize whatever that may be for you.

I have heard athletes say…”I didn’t come here to get the bronze. I came here to win the GOLD!”

Go for it!

Your turn! Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. You know I always love your feedback.

Wonderful post Ilka!

I loved the way you linked up Olympics in this post. :)

Don’t we all love the games, and just like you, I too prefer swimming and gymnastics to the others, though hardly get the time to see what I like – when I want. That’s because each of my kids like something different and we need to wait for our turn to watch what we like! But I manage to see it all online sometimes, or watch it on television when they are away at school. :)

Yes indeed, the life of all those participants isn’t easy and makes me wonder too at the hard work and dedication they all put in to reach where they are presently. I guess it’s a positive attitude accompanied with a strong will to go for it that drives them towards success.

This is exactly what’s needed in any kind of business or work that we take up. Unless we have that drive within us, and a want to achieve things, we really can’t make it out there.

Loved the 8 lessons we all need to learn from those awesome athletes. The best being to never give up and keep trying to reach for the gold. :)

Thanks for sharing and reminding us that all of us have a hidden Olympian within us just waiting to be tapped. :)

Hey Harleena,

Oh, I remember those times when the kids had control over the TV. Now they each have their own, but, I still don’t get to watch what I want sometimes because I share the TV in our family room with my husband, haha.

Yes indeed, it all comes down to discipline, a positive attitude and a strong desire to succeed. Just like in (any) business as well.

Thanks so much for your great feedback, Harleena! It’s always a pleasure :)

Be blessed,

Ilka

Hi Ilka,

hardly anybody would settle for mediocrity voluntarily, yet, despite the best intentions, the result could still be mediocre because people make mistakes.

When people settle for less than they could achieve, it’s because they chose this option because they thought that it brings them the most happiness – which can mean the least pain or the least hassle and not the most fame or success.

Or they chose a specific option because they thought that other options weren’t available to them.

If Michael Jordan hadn’t tried to play baseball, he would haver never fully realized that basketball is his true purpose. Probably the idea of not having tried would have haunted him and distracted him from playing basketball. He had the guts to switch – and to switch back.

Anke and I are talking a lot about leaving Germany and moving someplace else, far far away (for example New Zealand) because I am fed up with Germany. Chances are that certain things are bad anywhere in the world – but how can we know when we don’t try ? And I wouldn’t be afraid of moving back to Germany again if I was disappointed by my new home. It’s called admitting a mistake and making corrections.

And pushing past the pain ? Yes and no…if Michael Jordan had pushed himself past the pain in baseball, would it have served him ? Pushing past the pain only makes sense if we are riding the right vehicle. And, as weird as it sounds, pushing past the pain can be a struggle or we can push past the pain with ease and excitement. I know that from my marathon training.

Thanks for sharing your insights.

Take care

Hi Oliver,

Wow, what a loaded reply. Thanks so much for your great feedback!

I agree, people make a choice to settle, just as much as others chose not to.

I also agree with you that if Michael Jordan wouldn’t have tried baseball it would have always been in the back of his mind.

Now to your comment on leaving Germany and moving elsewhere. The grass is always greener on the other side. You don’t know what you have until you lose it. Think this over thoroughly!

Again thank you very much for adding great value to the conversation.

All the best,

Ilka

Hi Ilka

I love watching the Olympics. It really makes me want to take on the world.

I often struggle to find the time to update my blog, do a round of comments, keep up with the househusband day job and then think about doing some research for product creation.

I took a day off though today and took my son out for the day. It was so relaxing and brought the enthusiasm back!

Thanks for sharing those 8 points. I especially like the last point – Never Give Up.

Hi Tim,

I can relate. We get so darn busy with all the different chores we have to keep up with. So making a schedule really helps…and of course taking a day off to refocus and re-energize.

I bet your son really appreciated his day out with dad. Being a parent is the best job there is, isn’t it?

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and leave your thoughts, Tim!

Hi Ilka,

I love how you have used the Olympics as examples to show us what it really takes to achieve anything in life.

I never once viewed myself as an entrepreneur. I still don’t really and I never had that drive or ambition to be better. I think I just took in stride how things were and always just went with the flow.

It wasn’t until I lost my job and stumbled online that I started learning and understanding what it really takes to have success. I never even imagined it within my reach. Even at my age at that time I seriously had no idea.

I’ve always had a high work ethic though and I love to learn. It might take me longer to understand some things then other people but I’ve never been a quitter.

I’ve learned so much since venturing online and your examples here are such an inspiration and I hope for anyone who has ever thought they couldn’t have it all. So we might not be in our 20′s and have our whole long life ahead of us. What we do have is now and we can have it all still.

Love this post, thank you so much.

Hi Adrienne,

Huh, that’s kinda funny. For not having the drive or ambition to be an entrepreneur I think you’re doing pretty darn good :)

I can relate to it taking you a bit longer to understand things as I feel the same way. With me sometimes it is a language comprehension problem as well as “old age”, lol. But then again, having said that, sometimes when I explain things to people even younger than me they don’t grasp certain things quickly as well. So maybe it’s just technology :) The main thing is, to not giving up, no matter how long it will take to learn something.

Marketing online is certainly an adventure though isn’t it?

Thanks so much for your great feedback! Always a pleasure.

Good to publicize the dedication of the real olympic athletes. These are the role-models we should look to not those on reality tv.

Hi Elena,

You are right …Olympic athletes are our role-models! There is a lot to be learned from them, discipline, dedication, perseverance, believing in themselves, etc.

All the best,

Hey Ilka,

Watching the games, really does give you the confidence and belief to make things happen. What we can take way from the Olympics is the determination that and will power they have.

Swimmers train 6 days a week for 6 hours a day (Rebecca Adlington), now that’s hardcore. If we can commit to our project like that then we can do anything.

Hi Simmeon,

6 hours in a pool 6 days a week, now that is what I call dedication. Or like you say “hardcore.” Absolutely! And you’re right, if we would do the same thing, we would be propelling our business to new heights.

Thanks for adding your thoughts!

I seemed to have accidentally clicked the submit button while writing the comment, can you delete the previous one? Thank you :)

Now to the article:

Another thing I would add is to distribute our efforts equally (we don’t want to be tired quickly, do we?).

I liked how you compared networking marketing to Olympics, Ilka :) Great comparison!

And yes, you are right, many of these athletes took years of practice to get everything they way they want to (patience!). But, there is a big difference between us and them – they can’t afford any mistakes while playing, but we can (Mistakes are great for us, teaches us lessons).

I am not settling for mediocrity! I am aiming for gold ;)

I have spending some time lately to blog commenting, do you have a list of blogs you comment on, Ilka? If so, would you mind to share? I am looking for more blogs to comment.

Hi Jeevan,

Thanks for the add. Yes, distributing our efforts equally is very, very important. If we don’t we will risk burn out.

I also loved your second point of, that we networkers unlike Olympic athletes are allowed to make mistakes and even benefit from them versus athletes who would risk a medal. Very good point!

Ilka

P.S. I’m glad you’re aiming for the gold. Go for it!

[Reply]

Ilka,

Another excellent post. Well written, motivational and inspiring. There have been moments where I feel like I’m going for Gold but also times where I’m falling behind thinking that finishing just outside the medal positions isn’t too bad at all.

I think the winners at the Olympics (especially Team GB’s performance for me) will really help push us all harder towards realising our goals.

Hi Garet,

There’s nothing wrong with that. It just proves that you are human. And yes picking a role-model, whether it is from inside of sports or one in your industry is a good thing. Because it is a proven fact that if you hang with the right people they will lift you up to their standards.

Thanks for being so honest!

Hi Ilka thats a wonderfull post i really enjoyed how you used the sporting Themes i too like to think of the marketing business as a massive training schedule and one that needs commitment and perserverance. what i took from it was the stick with what you know, too many people are taking on too many programs and offers and they just spread their energy too far and it snaps. the old adage of K.I.S.S works for me
Thanks

Excellent post, Ilka,

I’ve seen that commercial and it caught my attention… luck didn’t get me here… Love it! That’s one commercial many people need to see for once.

Athletes are an excellent example that I use a lot when I coach people. They are never lazy and don’t find excuses. They just go for it head strong. So, taking that analogy with the Olympic games was an excellent one.

Thanks for this :)

Hi Ilka,

Yes – I ado agree. When one looks at it one can learn quite a lot form the athletes themselves. Found this to be quite a well thought out intuitive post. Thanks for sharing the great tips.
