How to Focus on One Thing and then Believe in Yourself

I found this great video below a couple of days ago where Tyler Perry talks about how to focus on just one thing and then believe in yourself to be successful. The words he said touched my heart at the very core so I knew I just had to share this with you all.
Now focus and belief are areas I struggle with myself occasionally and I know I’m not alone. But both focus and belief are two of the very key ingredients to success. Success in anything for that matter.
What do you visualize when you think
“Focus on one thing?”
I visualize this…
When our boys were just kids they went out into our cul-de-sac one day and did a little experiment with a magnifying glass and the newspaper they found lying in our drive way. I’m sure you can guess what’s coming.
They angled the magnifying glass so that the sunlight would totally concentrate in the middle of the lens and the beam would create a very small area on the newspaper. All of the sun’s energy was focused on that one small area of the paper and before long it was on fire.
(Unfortunately our boys were curious if that experiment would have the same results on grass. So a short time later they tried it out in the gulch near our neighborhood. Luckily they didn’t set the whole neighborhood on fire but just a little area of the grass. But boy did they get in trouble for that!)
So you see, when you really just focus on ONE thing and put all of your energy in it then you will set it on fire.
Believe in yourself with every fiber of your being.
The same goes for your belief. You absolutely have to believe with every fiber of your being that you will succeed. Think about it, if you don’t believe in yourself, who will?
I know it’s hard sometimes, when you don’t see results although you have been working so hard.
You’ve been planting the seeds, you’ve been watering them, however you don’t see anything grow. It’s very easy then for doubt to creep in, isn’t it?
When that happens to me, I think of the bamboo story.
You may know the story. It goes something like this…
See when you plant a bamboo seed in the ground you don’t see anything grow for the first year, yet you need to water it constantly or it will die. You don’t even see anything grow in the second year, or the third, or the fourth for that matter. But if you don’t keep watering it, it will surely die. So you do.
Then finally in the fifth year you will see a tiny little sprout appear from the earth. That is of course, if you hadn’t given up on it in the meantime.
So if you kept up your belief and didn’t quit, and kept watering that little seed you will be nicely rewarded as this little bamboo sprout will grow to 100 feet high within the next six month.
Now the story of the bamboo is really a great example for believing in yourself because, just because you don’t see anything grow doesn’t mean there is nothing going on.
You see, during those 5 years of seemingly nothing happening, that little bamboo seed grew strong roots that gave it what it needed to survive.
The moral of the story is, that just because you don’t see any results means that there are none. So keep planting those seeds and keep watering them and eventually you will reap the rewards of your labor and create the success you desire.
And now on to the great video who was the inspiration for my blog post for today.
Let Tyler Perry show you how to …
Focus on just one thing and then don’t stop believing in yourself!
If you found this post inspirational, please pass it on to your friends. And as always do leave your feedback in the comments below. Thank You!
To your massive success!

Hi Ilka,
I couldn’t agree more. One of my beloved niches is personal development and I totally agree with everything that Tyler Perry is saying here.
Belief, is everything. Everything. If you don’t believe in yourself there is no talent that will be able to cover for it.
I have in my close family two extremely talented people, but they never believed in themselves and their talent alone was certainly not enough to make it.
Thanks for this great post

Hi Sylviane,
I totally know where you are coming from. It’s sad, really and it hurts even more when it’s family.
We have a saying in Germany that “belief can move mountains.” I think talent is really just a small part of success, don’t you agree?
Well, I really hope your family members one day start believing in themselves before it is too late.
Thanks so much for coming by! It’s a pleasure to meet you.

Good for you, Scott! I just mentioned to Adrienne below, that one really should watch it over and over again so it really sinks in and becomes second nature.
It’s easy to fall off the wagon and fall back into doubt and limiting beliefs.

Hi Ilka,
Splendid analogies!
The magnifying glass is perfect. So many divide their attention, making no real impact because their power is divided.
As for the bamboo, when it looks like nothing is working, Everything is work….emphasis on capital “E”, as the Universe is setting things up behind the scenes if you believe you will achieve.
Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much, Ryan, for your kind words! I thought too that the analogy with the magnifying glass would fit best. Like I said, that’s what I think about first when I think about focus. Can’t think of anything else that channels energy more precisely to one point.
I love how you said, “when it looks like nothing is working, Everything is working….emphasis on capital “E” …Absolutely!
The Universe is always at work one way or another.
Thanks so much for your great feedback!

Excellent post. Everyone who has ever made it says these words, “You cannot stop believing.” Read it, listen to the man’s words, internalize it. Whatever you are doing, the principle is the same.

Fantastic video. Fantastic article.
Stick with something no matter what. We can do anything we put our minds to. We simply have to have to want something so bad, nothing will stand in your way.
Never give up!

Hi Ilka,
Thanks for the inspiration in this post. Your analogies and the video say it perfectly.
It reminds me of the following quote –
“It takes 20 years to make an overnight success” Eddie Cantor
So often we think others did not have to focus and believe in themselves for a long time before they were successful but this is rarely the case. The sooner one commits to the goal the sooner those 20 years will begin!

Great post, Ilka!
Believing in myself is essential to living the great life I enjoy today. My life isn’t perfect, of course, but it’s a good life and I enjoy it as much as I can.
I didn’t always believe in myself. In my teenage years I had very low self-esteem and everything felt hopeless. It was suggested to me that I look in the mirror every day and say, “I love you.” I had nothing to lose so I tried it. I did this day after day after day. Several months later I started to notice that it was true, and it has been true ever since.
I focused on loving myself, and believing in myself, and after some time that patient practice gave me a wonderful gift that I will never return!

Great post and great video message from Tyler Ilka. I shared this video on my Facebook Fan Page several weeks back. His message is something everyone needs to hear.
I loved the part that he shared when he said that if you don’t believe, it will never happen. You have to know that it will with all of your being.
I love the story of the bamboo. I know that at times in the past I got so very frustrated since I knew I was doing the work and believing in myself. I just couldn’t for the life of me understand why I wasn’t see results. I finally had to stop with that way of thinking altogether and it eventually started showing up. See, I still had little bitty seeds of doubt even then.
Fabulous message and a great one to share as we are still at the beginning of this new year. May Tyler’s words ring true for everyone.
Thank you Ilka.

The bamboo story is one of my favorite inspirational stories too. It sure keeps you going when things look bleak.

Hey Ilka, what a lovely message!! Thanks so much for sharing it. I like Adrienne feel that everyone needs to hear that message… often.
I also (like Adrienne) love the Bamboo Story. I just heard another similar one as I am finally reading The Slight Edge. The story in that book is about a Water Hyacinth and has a similar message.
I would also like to mention Ilka, that ‘we’ have very similar thoughts and almost the same time. No wonder I feel a very fond connection!
I have been ‘battling’ with a post today. I say ‘battling’ because I am going through a phase where I just can’t get the words right. In any event, the post that I hope to complete before my laptop is thrown through the window
is about “One Thing” and although it has a different spin; for example I am talking about how ‘One Thing” can be all you need…I find it funny that we quite often have similar post titles at the same time.
For example, last year I thought I was being SO smart and cute! I wrote a post on Blokube and titled it ‘Be There or Be Square” obviously playing on the ‘cube’ part of the name.
About two weeks after I posted it, I came across your post with the exact same title!! LOL
Obviously you are one step ahead… often!
Lovely post Ilka. Thanks so much for sharing it.

Sometimes when I find myself battling with a message or post as you say, I find I am battling with myself because I don’t want to embrace the very thing I am supposed to be blogging about.
Then again, being sandy eyed tired can do it, too, and a walk helps clear my mind.
With my impending marriage and arguing with myself over solo ads, I walk a lot these days, LOL.

Well congrats Tim!! I can see you might be a little tired… with all the wedding plans and all.
I know what you mean regarding not embracing the post, but lately my thoughts are not agreeing with the order in which the words come out.
even when I am passionate and feel strongly about what I’m saying. I think it might be ‘old-timers’ setting in.
Walks are great to clear the noggin. Enjoy yours!

Ha, isn’t that funny that we have the same ideas. But then again, they say … “great minds think alike.”
Didn’t realize our posts about Blokube had the exact same title. Wow! Isn’t that something.
Hey, I do know the story about the Water Hyacinth. Incredible, isn’t it?! Goes to show what happens if you’re patient.
Sometimes, when I can’t get the words right I just wait a day or so and write about something else in the meantime. Because when the time is right the words will flow all on their own.
So, what are you writing about next? Haha
Have an awesome day and thanks so much for your great feedback!

HI Ilka, yes, I often have to ‘sleep’ on it or do a post for one of my niche sites instead. Often the messages on the other sites are a little less meaningful… (if that makes any sense)…
What I mean is… they’re more casual and are not necessarily matters of the ‘heart’ which personal development is. (as you know).
I am ‘trying’ to write on how “one thing” can sometimes be all you need. ie: sometimes ‘one thing’ can change your path.
Now unless you mean what am I writing on after… I am thinking it’s about ‘minding your own business” …. LOL
– I don’t mean YOU … I’ll share anything with you anyday. What I mean is… how sometimes buckling down and doing your own thing … is a good thing. (hope that made sense). LOL
Talk soon

Hey Ilka,
This is such an inspiring post ! I love how you combine the posts: few techie stuff then boom some inspiration straight in your heart
Beautiful examples with the magnifying glass and the bamboo tree..it’s amazing what focus and patience can do in both cases..And the video is breath taking..
Beliefs create our reality. Period. Belief is your part..how it’s going to happen it’s God work..In the Bible there is a great example too, with Job: Bassically God allowed to Satan to test Job who was a very rich man but faithful, God loving person..7 years(I guess) of struggle, his children died or were murdered, he lost his home and fortune, his wife, got sick and others..People felt pitty for him but all that Job said everytime was: God gave me, God took it from me..blessed be the name of God. After those 7 years, he started to recover and very soon he had more than before plus new children with a new wife. Not 100% accurate but this is the idea
This is the power of total belief..many of us don’t have these problems..but whatever comes in our way, comes for a reason..keep your heart open, be grateful and love everything..miracles will happen, I firmly believe it
Ilka you made my day with this post..once again:)
Thank you very much!
PS: If you heard of Bashar( an ET channeled through a human being, Darryl Anka) check him out..he has some beautiful speeches about beliefs on youtube.

Hi Radu,
Thanks for sharing the story of Job! Yes, that is really the epitome of belief. I don’t know if I could be that strong to tell you the truth.
But belief creates your reality as you say. Without belief …and especially believing in yourself you have nothing.
Now some people have a hard time with that. Their self-esteem is pretty low and they are struggling. So it is important to surround yourself with people who believe in you until the time comes that you believe in yourself.
Thank you so much for sharing your great feedback, Radu!

This post and video is inspiring. Like many I struggled too and was like a “chook with it’s head cut off” running around and trying so many different things on the internet. But what was actually working for me from the beginning I wasn’t focusing on and got side tracked with all the other opportunities. I eventually cut off all my stuff I was spinning in circles with and began to focus on what I really wanted to do. I so agree. Do one thing at a time and focus on it and not allow yourself get influenced through all the stuff out there that will side track you from your business you’re building.

Hi Tanja,
Welcome to my blog! It’s so nice to meet you.
Yes, it’s hard to function when you run around like your head is cut off, isn’t it? If you have your fingers in too many things you’re likely to burn them. Or burn yourself out, which basically amounts to the same thing.
However, when you focus on just one thing, not only will your life be much easier, you will also create the success that you desire because all of your energy flows into that one thing.
Thanks for stopping by and adding your valuable feedback…and also thanks for sharing this post! I so appreciate it!

Love how you used examples to explain the importance of concentration, consistency and patience
I think I know the importance of consistent effort with blogging, because I wasn’t consistent with my first blog – I really regret that mistake and that’s why I shut that blog down and started a new one (I have been putting a lot more effort into this new blog and I am really seeing good results
