Need Network Marketing Advice? 7 Tips To Make Your Start Easier

I was recently asked what advice I would give to someone just starting out in network marketing. Thanks, Josh, for providing me the topic for my blog post for today.

Here is how I answered the question of, “What advice would you give to a person who’s willing to start from step one?”

1) Pick the right company and products for YOU.

This is very important. Because, if you are not passionate about the products and the company you represent it will be hard to get others to join your team. People must feel your excitement. Excitement is contagious.

2) Learn everything you can about your company, the products and the compensation plan.

Be careful not to get analysis paralysis. Keep introducing people to your opportunity and products while you learn.

3) Always ask for help.

Keep in touch with your sponsor. S/he should have an interest in helping you succeed. If your sponsor is new or not available, go upline or sideline until you find somebody you can connect with. There are selfless leaders in every company who are willing to lend a helping hand.

4) Realize that, just like any other business, network marketing has its learning curve.

Failure is part of learning. You haven’t really failed until you give up. And besides, … “Failure is nothing more than another opportunity to succeed.”

5) Surround yourself with successful people.

People who have been there and done that. Learn from them and with them. They will lift you up. There are many pieces to the network marketing puzzle and there is always somebody who is an expert in one area or another.

6) Keep your day job until you can comfortably live on your network marketing income.

There is nothing wrong with starting your network marketing business part-time. Actually, it can be an advantage because it takes off the pressure of having to earn a certain amount of money within a certain amount of time.

Jim Rohn said it best … “Work full-time in your job and part-time on your fortune.”

7) Most important … Don’t ever learn how to quit.

Don’t give up when things get tough. There will be ups and downs and there will be times when you feel like quitting. Nobody said it’s going to be easy and even leaders have bad days. So…. don’t quit!

If you have any more tips or advice to share with someone just starting out in network marketing, please share it below in the comment box. It is very much appreciated!

And please, as always, if you liked this post, share it on Twitter and with your Facebook friends. Thank you!

5 is a great point. It sounds simple and like it wont do much but it really works. I have learned so much from successful people. Now I communicate with them daily. The knowledge I gain from them is priceless.

Hey Ilka!

Those are some great points.

They say people join people, not companies, but I have to disagree a little with this. I’m with you on #1. If you don’t have a passion for your products, it will show.

I still recall my husband telling me ‘you don’t look into it’ when I was packing up the car to do a party. He was right! And it showed!

Sometimes you have to quit to do some soul searching to find what is right for you and your situation. I found out I didn’t like doing parties and the product wasn’t providing a solution. I like to help people!

As long as that is the reason for quitting, that’s one thing. If you quit because you think you can’t do something, then that’s a quitters mentality which is not good.

Great post!

Hi Twila,

Absolutely! I don’t think you “quit quit.” (Is there such thing, LOL, but I’m sure you know what I mean.)

There is actually a great little book by Seth Godin titled “The Dip – A Little Book That Teaches You When To Quit (And When To Stick)” which talks exactly about that.

Have an awesome day!

I refer to it as taking some “time for reflection” LOL

Plus, I haven’t stopped blogging and working because “I’m in the business of me” anyway! ; )

Hey Ilka,

This is a great list!

In my eyes, the most important on that list is #7.

Never ever quit! It is hard to win when you have a quitter’s mentality.

Hi Josh,

I absolutely agree with you 100% about #7 being the most important.

“Quitters never win and winners never quit.”

Be a WINNER!

Make it a great day!

Hi Ilka,

Nice blog you have here! :)

Good points you share and while I agree with them all I think I’d like to highlight No 5.

Not only are relationships with prospects important but with our marketing peers too. In amongst all the ‘noise’ that defines network marketing one can often feel isolated especially when one’s family and friends don’t share our vision.

The other important point is that regardless of company and product one must be learn how to market. I have found that the best sources for this do not lie with network marketing companies but people who have learned the way either with your company or not and who are prepared to share this with you.

Cheers

Hi Marcus,

Nice to see you here! Thanks for stopping by!

You made some very valuable points …

1) Pointing out the importance to build a relationship with your marketing peers. They will have your back.

2) That network marketing companies are not your best source to learn how to market their product. They wouldn’t need us if they were. (Just kidding…NOT!)

I agree 100%.

Enjoy your evening and feel welcome to drop back by anytime.

Hey Ilka,

I like the way you talk about being passionate for your company. It is refreshing to hear.

I think people would be lucky to have you in their up line.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your kind words and compliment!

I tell you a secret (just between you and me, okay?)
I have a very hard time promoting a company or products I don’t totally believe in and am passionate about. It just doesn’t work for me.

Now, I’ve got to run and see what your “Greatest Hits” are all about.

Catch you later,

Ilka

Hi Ilka,

That’s a great list to get someone started!

I agree, the company matters and what they have to offer does as well.

Sure you can MAKE it work no matter what company you’re with. They join you first. But it sure makes it easier if you’re passionate about it!

All your points are great. Surround yourself with those other like minded people. That is NOT going to be every networker out there that’s online.

Great job!

Hi Susanna,

You are making a very valuable point. Follow the elite! Not every networker fits that profile.

But I think the “Better Bunch” qualifies for sure! Great group o flike-minded people!

Make it an awesome day!

Hi Wayne,

Glad you like that quote.

You made me very curious about your new blog title. I love “The Goonies.” Must have watched it at least 20 times with my kids. It’s our oldest son’s favorite movie.

You have an awesome evening and thanks for stopping by!

Ilka,
One thing to add. Pick two marketing methods at the most initially and master them. I always talk to people who try to do everything and aren’t very good at anything.

Hi Eric,

Very good point! It’s not good to be a “Jack of all trades and master of none.”

Thanks for stopping back by and have an awesome evening! Take care of that little one. They do grow up so fast.

Hello Ilka,

Again thank you so much for your personal words of advice as well as your blog. I really like number 3 & 5. I think sometimes we fall into the trap of believing we can do it all on our own. I know I’m guilty of this but thanks to your introduction to the group I realize there are others with experience out there and they don’t mind providing a helping hand. I can admit to doing soooo many things wrong but the one thing I’m convinced of doing right was not quitting. Good things come to those who are patient. Thanks again Ilka.

Hi Josh,

Nice to see you here. Thanks for stopping by! And you are more than welcome :)

Trust me, we all have been making mistakes. I certainly had my share. It’s when we realize it and ask for help that we grow.

I’m glad you came over and checked out my friends. They are an incredible bunch!

Have an awesome weekend!
