The Importance of Qualifying Your Network Marketing Prospects

Are you barking up the wrong tree in your MLM prospecting?

If you are still fairly new to network marketing the following scenarios may sound painfully familiar to you. But don’t feel too bad. Most of us network marketers have experienced them or something similar. As time goes on and you get better, none of this will be an issue anymore. So, here’s my question …

Has any of this ever happened to you?

1)   You just drove over an hour to meet with a prospect. When you got there they were a no-show.

2)   You gave what in your opinion was the best network marketing presentation of your life and your prospect tells you they are not interested.

3)   You got over your fear of picking up the phone, called your prospect, gave an excellent presentation for your network marketing business and as soon as you were finished they started pitching THEIR business to you.

4)   You know someone would just absolutely be perfect for your program or service, but when you approach them they’re giving you the cold shoulder.

5)   You made several appointments with a prospect to get feedback on the DVD you send him/her, but they keep coming up with excuses why they haven’t watched it yet.

In all the scenarios above you have been just wasting your precious time.

I should know, because all of them happened to me.

Not only that, they all delivered a big blow to my self-confidence. I felt like a complete idiot. A total failure!

And I could have prevented all of them from happening … If I had pre-qualified my MLM prospects.

But at the time, I didn’t know any better. I just followed what my upline told me to do.

Network marketing today is a bit different from when I first started.

You can google just about anything and find the answers to your most pressing questions.

Or you can hang with the right people … Like “The Better Bunch” and learn from them. Don’t know who the Better Bunch are? Read “The Story Behind The Better Bunch” by Dwayne Huggins. I highly recommend you read his article and find out. It could shave  years off of your network marketing learning curve. And YES, there is one!

Sorry, I got a bit off track.

So, how do you qualify your MLM prospects?

By asking questions like…

“If I can show you a way how you can add additional income to your monthly paycheck and you feel completely comfortable with it, would you be ready to do business?

“If I can show you a way how you can get a pay raise without going to your boss, when would you have 30 minutes to have a closer look?”

“If I could show you how you can take advantage of tax benefits like the rich people do, would it be worth your time to spend 30 minutes with me? And when would be a better time for you, Monday at 7:00PM or Wednesday at 6:30PM?

Notice that these questions nail your prospect down to either give you a simple yes or no answer or a commitment to meet with you.

No more wasting your time on lookiloos or tire-kickers. Your time is way to precious.

Hope this helps you separate the good prospects from the bad ones.

Hi Ilka,

I’ve wasted lots of time on the wrong people in the past. It’s so tempting when you’re starting out because there are people you just KNOW would be great at it! haha

How annoying it would be to drive that long for a no show! That one hasn’t happened to me, but then this area is so small I only have to go 15 minutes max to get to anyone withing 100 miles of me. ;) (Okay, small AND isolated!)

I have given some killer presentations before and not even gotten a nibble. I just smile and use it as a learning experience, or practice.

You are so right, NEED to pre-qualify prospects and quit wasting precious time.

Quality post!

Hi Susanna,

Randy and I used to live in an isolated spot like that before. In Ft.Huachuca, which is in the middle of the desert of Arizona about 70 miles south of Tucson.

Now with online presentations prospects are easier to pre-qualify. It saves on gas and time too.

Have an awesome day!

Good morning Ilka,

This is a great post and you cover a lot of the misconceptions a newbie faces when they begin their MLM career…

The addition of following Jason and The “Better Bunch” is a great tip for anyone looking for million dollar pointers on how to grow their business.

Have a wonderful day!

Hi Anne,

You brought up a very valuable point. Following Jason and the “Better Bunch” is something I would recommend to anyone just starting out as well as those who’ve been at it for a while. You can’t put a price tag on the information provided there.

“Million dollar pointers” is about right.

Have an awesome day!

Hi Ilka,

You cover some very important info here for newbies. I have to say that when one applies the principles of attraction marketing and your leads approach you rather than the other way around then a lot of the situations you describe above are minimized a great deal.

Hi Marcus,

I couldn’t have said it any better. “Attraction Marketing” is where it’s at. Become the hunted not the hunter.

Great point!!

Hey Ilka,

This is so important for any business owner. You must pre-qualify your prospect for your business. The worst thing is spending time with the wrong person. This is a mistake I see a lot of newbie’s make. Great job covering it!

Hi Josh,

I knew it so well because it happened to me. And gosh, I don’t want anyone else to experience this. It was absolutely no fun and can kill your enthusiasm really quick.

Like Marcus pointed out ….”apply the principles of attraction marketing and your leads approach you rather then the other way around.”

Make it a fantastic day!

Hi Ilka,

If I had a dime for number 5 I would be retired by now, lol.
The power of pre-qualifying is key. Another great way is part of the Weiser method. You are hot/cold with a prospect and you have them Grab A Pen- GAP, send them to a conference call of some sort. If you are series they WILL contact you.

Thank you for the list.

Hi Tommy,

I hear ya on #5! What can be so hard about putting a DVD in a DVD player and press “Play.” But that’s not really the point.

The point is having that DVD handed to the WRONG person. One that wasn’t hungry or didn’t want to change things.

I’ve heard that “GAP” thing before. It’s about actively involving them in the conversation by making them writing down the number for the conference call (or online presentation) and your phone number to call you back, right? If they are serious they will. That will weed out the tire-kickers too.

Have an awesome day!

Great Article Ilka,

Definitely took me down a memory lane that I’m glad is a “memory”.

It’s so true though. In the beginning, we want ppl to join our biz so bad we’ll take anyone instead of qualifying them to see if they’re a good fit to work with us.

Thanks for the article,

Rhonda :)

Hi Rhonda,

Yes, you’re right! That’s something I’d rather forget too, lol. It was a great learning experience though I have to admit.

Having our own business gives us the benefit to choose who we want to work with and we should really take advantage of that.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

Thanks so much, Ilka, for an excellent article. Been there, done that so many times. Your approach questions for prospects are super and I will be utilizing them more. Sometimes I forget the better ideas for finding good prospects. Timely information and a great reminder.

Thanks much.

You know, I just thought about all that again this afternoon …

How very blessed we are to be part of the “Better Bunch.” I have picked up some great information lately for which my husband paid hundreds of dollars for. And I didn’t pay a penny for that.

Plus … the relationships we build with other members of the “Better Bunch” are absolutely priceless.

Have a great night!

Hey Ilka,

I have got to come by here more often. Way too much going on in my world right now.

I laughed out loud when I read number 3. I have had countless people opt-in to my list, just to reply to my emails with a sales pitch. Crazy

You gave out some great information here. I had to share it. You never know who might be looking for a way to avoid giving out dvd’s to people without tv’s lol.

I remember Mike Dillard saying that when you take emotion out of business, then rejection is not personal anymore.

I agree with that. Now rejection is not personal any longer; it’s all a part of business.

Actually, since I read that thought, I was never rejected again because of proper qualifying.

Great topic to talk about, Ilka, and great thoughts.

Hi Ana,

Thanks for stopping back by! Mike Dillard is a very smart man!! Business isn’t personal … unless you let it be. And if you do, you open yourself up to a lot of hurt. So, better keep the two separate.

Have an awesome weekend!
