Do You Sleep When the Wind Blows?

| Posted in Network Marketing |

Sleep when the wind blowsBuilding a network marketing business is tough. Nobody said it was going to be easy.  Well, if someone did, they were not telling you the truth. It’s an uphill battle at first, but then it gets to the fun part…the part where “you can sleep when the wind blows.”

During that first part you are often tempted to quit. Don’t give in to temptation. Nothing worth having comes easy. In the beginning of building your network marketing business you do a lot of work and get only paid a little. But if you don’t quit if you keep your eye on the price and work hard then eventually you will reach a stage when you work very little in your business and get paid a lot.

Let me share a little story with you that will paint a picture in your mind you can pull up when things get tough, when you get frustrated, when doubt sets in and you are tempted to just “throw the towel.” Trust me, I’ve been there, plenty of times….

Do You Sleep When the Wind Blows?

Years ago a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the region, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received nothing but refusals. Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer.

“Are you a good farm hand?” the farmer asked him. Well, I sleep when the wind blows, answered the little man. Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man’s work.

Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand’s sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, “Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!” The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, “No sir. I told you, I sleep when the wind blows.”

Enraged by the old man’s response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away. The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, and he returned to bed to also sleep while the wind blew.

I love inspirational stories like this one and I hope you liked it too. I think of it when I hit a rough spot, when things don’t go the way I would like them to go. It compels me to push right through; it reminds me to not give up. Quitting is not an option, no matter what.  Because for one I don’t like the alternative, and two, I would like to sleep when the wind blows, meaning never have to worry about money ever again….And I’m not there yet.

So, how about you are you willing to do whatever it takes, so one day you don’t have to worry about money ever again? Make some noise in the comment section below. You know I always love your feedback.

Loved it Ilka!

I was lost in the story and yes, I guess all of us would love to sleep when the wind blows (that makes the perfect kind of atmosphere too) :)

I think building any business, network, or doing the things you do isn’t easy and does require hard work and dedication. But if you tread your path carefully and take the steps required to deal with various situations in advance, you can never really be hit by the storms – isn’t it?

Yes, we all do get disturbed or agitated if things don’t go the way we want them to, but that’s only being human I guess. We need to face the hardships and not quit, instead learn from the little mishaps that may occur, which only make us stronger.

Thanks for sharing a wonderful post with an inspiring story. :)

Hi Ilka
What a great story, thanks for sharing it with your readers!

A lot of people do quit this business and I think they have the wrong mindset from the beginning. Not everything in life is easy and we must be determined to succeed or we will fail, that comes back to mindset. Never give up if you want to build up your business, of course there will be set backs, you may go 3 steps forward and then 5 steps back but then you get back up and start again, rethink what went wrong and fix it!
Thanks for sharing, hope you have a great day

Hi Pauline,

I love the way you said, …”rethink what went wrong and fix it!”

A lot of people won’t do that. It’s just easier to quit than to figure out what went wrong. Those are usually the people who blame everyone and everything else.

A very wise person once told me…”When you point a finger, look at the three pointing back to YOU.” We have to take responsibility of our own actions.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your thoughts!

Hi Ilka,

what a wonderful story. It also shows us to stay calm when the going gets a bit tough. The only way to truly fail in MLM is to quit. On the other hand, we need to plan, do, review and adjust our plans if something it isn’t working or not working anymore. Be open to change things without losing the connection to our goals. I am not saying “losing sight” because we might exactly do that. Losing sight of our goals. That reminds of the first woman who swam across the English Channel. On her first attempt, she gave up a few hundred meters away from the English shore – she lost sight because of extremely dense fog. After that she said, if she had known how close she actually was, she wouldn’t have given up.

Thanks for the great reminder Ilka. Amazing bedtime story for me :-)

Cheers

Hi Oliver,

Gosh, I didn’t know this about the first woman ever to swim the Channel. So close and yet so far. If she’d only known. You know that sort of thing happens so often in life. That’s why it’s important to never, ever, give up no matter what.

Thank you so much for your amazing feedback! I truly appreciate it.

Hi Ilka,

Super! This is why I work. Freedom. Freedom is my Why, my pulsating, driving force, and the emotion inspires me to work intelligently, to spend serious time in personal development and persist like heck.

If you want it, you will get it. Simple. If you want to sleep while the wind blows it is possible. But you need to embrace the uncomfortable feelings that arise. In truth, this gig gets easier AFTER you face, embrace and release the low energy feelings of despair, hopelessness, embarrassment…all the blocks which prevent you from being a success. The neat part? As you face, embrace and release these emotions, you attract more high energy people, more money and you can begin sleeping a bit more when the wind blows.

You move into higher circles. All because your self-image changed, because you faced up to emotions most people bury, or run away from. Make no mistake about it: whatever you run from, follows you. Face up, become free, prosper and move into the small percentile of people on earth who have the means to do whatever they want to do.

Thanks for sharing your insight Ilka!

I really like the story! I think aside from not giving up, it also teaches us faith. You have to have faith in what you are doing and what you are getting into because it’s the most important thing that keeps you going in the first place. If you put in even just a little bit of doubt, you’re more prone to giving up.

I’ve never heard that story before Ilka but I love it.

We all feel like quitting when things get rough but then we’d never get over that hump and be able to reap the benefits from all that hard work. It’s all about the lessons we learn along the way too.

Whoever said life was easy! I want to live in their world if that’s the case. Okay, maybe not. I sure wouldn’t be as interesting would it!

Great little story! I think almost everyone comes into our industry with the same thoughts but for some when the going gets tough they drop out. Many drop out, regret it and start again only to continue the cycle. If only they didn’t quit and just kept going they would have eventually succeeded. I’ll NEVER quit which is why one day I’ll be ‘sleeping when the wind blows’ too.

Hi Ilka,
Thanks for sharing the story and we could learn a good lesson from it. If we work in advance to tackle the hard situation then we don’t get affraid when it happened. Quitting the things in difficult situation is not the solution. The solution is to know how to tackle it and believe in your ownselves.

Hey Ilka,

I liked the inspirational story very much.
To me this home based business means more than just money.
It’s self growth mainly. I love pushing my limits and test what I’m really capable of, I’ve gotta keep living out of my comfort zone. Doing things that I’ve never dreamed of is “hella” uncomfortable…………at first, but later it becomes a exhilarating…..

Ja, wenn alles erledigt ist dann ist es einfach zu schlafen wenn der Wind blaest. (Yes, when everything is done, than it’s easy to sleep when the wind blows.

To get to that point will take some effort but it is very well worth it in the end.

Really nice story… :) This sure applies not just to network marketing, but to whatever you do to make money.

I’ve been trying to reach my online business goal for well over 5 years. I’ve decided long time ago, that I’ll never give up so. It’s always a journey, and becoming better as each day passes by, equipping you for your final destiny. Success takes time and effort, because time and effort are what equips you to stay in the success when you reach there.

A success easily achieved won’t last long, but a success earned by hard work, will last forever, because it’s during the hard times that you’ve been tried, tested and perfected to stand.

I think building any business, network, or doing the things you do isn’t easy and does require hard work and dedication. You’re right in saying that nothing worth doing is easy.

However, its about more than just persevering, and I was glad to see it in your post. Its about keeping a stiff upper lip and ultimately believing in yourself.

You’re right, believing in yourself is a very big part of success. If you don’t believe in yourself you might as well quit. Sometimes we need help with that. Other people may see something in us that we don’t yet see.

That’s why personal development is so important, not just in network marketing but in life in general as well.

Ahhh…this is just what I needed to find today. Love the lesson in the story.

It’s funny how this business works. Most ‘jobs’ require you to work a lot if you want to get paid a lot. The two consistently go hand in had. So marketing and online business goes against everything we have been taught! We work our asses off and get paid nothing in the beginning. But you are right – the payoff is worth it.

Hi,

I remember this story from over twenty years ago -it was given in a public discourse called “can you sleep on a windy night?” by a Circuit Overseer of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the U.S.

It can still be downloaded in MP3 fomat. It was one of my favorites -especially the way he gave it.
