Being A Parent Can Be A Huge Advantage In Network Marketing

I actually had a different topic planed for today. But decided to piggyback on Jason Better’s post from yesterday. His post yesterday was about “Multi-Level Moms and Dads.” What a great topic and definitely some incredible food for thought.
Some may find that having children might hinder them in their home business. I find it quite the opposite. It can be a HUGE advantage single network marketers don’t have. We parents have a lot of opportunities for networking other people wouldn’t even get.
Just think about it…
When you are bringing your toddler to preschool you meet other preschool parents to hook up and go out for coffee with. Btw, that’s how I got introduced to Tupperware, taking our oldest son to a German Kindergarten and meeting a Tupperware rep there. I’m still buying Tupperware today, because I fell in love with the products. Later when our boys were playing sports, there were always moms and dads around to network with.
The $64,000 Question…
When you meet other parents on the football field or at the hockey rink it’s inevitable that the question comes up, … so, what do you do? And that is your invitation to tell them about your business. Now be careful not to ‘throw up’ on them or they will run the other way and you’ll be forever labeled as “one of those people”. But in a few words just let them know what you do and then kindly ask for referrals. That takes the pressure off of the person you talk to and they don’t feel like you are directly talking to them and trying to recruit them or sell your product to them.
For example, if you market an energy product the conversation could go something like this…
_ So, what do you do?
_ I market a product for people who are always tired and have no energy like I used to. I didn’t want to use prescription drugs but was looking for something natural to boost my energy. Then one day I found this product and within a month my energy level was up and I was no longer tired. I felt ten years younger. Do you know anyone who might want to know about a product like that?
You would be surprised to see how many hands go up of people saying,… “Oh me. I could use a product like that. Tell me more.” And there’s absolute no pressure. You are just asking for referrals. (By the way, I learned this technique from Kim Klaver.)
Go ahead, try it next time you’re out and about with your kids. Oh, and by the way, if you don’t have kids yet, borrow your neighbor’s or get a puppy. It works the same way. You just need a conversation starter. Our oldest once thought it was a great idea to take our Boxer puppy to the mall to “meet chicks.” Well, it worked.

Hey Ilka
Its true being a parent does open many doors and opportunities to network.
Its good to hear that you put this to good use. I was never the great talker so I used to shy away from conversation with other parents. (Thats all changed now tho)
Good post

Hello Dwayne,
I started off like I mentioned to Josh above. Then came a time when I didn’t say anything at all. I had kind of joined the NFL (No Friends Left) and was very discouraged by the fact that people couldn’t get excited about what I had to share.
Then I learned what to say and how to say it and things became a whole lot easier
Thanks for stopping by and leaving me your thoughts!
Have a fantastic day!

Hey Ilka,
Whenever I hear someone brand new to the industry usually I hear them telling people way to much. This is great info and who tell someone what you do for your business.
Chat with you later…

Hey Josh,
I hear you. People are just sooo excited and they just want to share there new opportunity forgetting that the people they talk to have never heard of XYZ company or XYZ product and feel totally overwhelmed …and ehm, kind of like they were just hit by a bus.
I confess, I started out the same way
Have a great evening and thanks for stopping by!

Hi Ilka,
You’re right, that is one of the advantages of being a parent.
I get asked questions all the time that lead in perfectly to my business. At first I’m sure I looked a bit like a deer caught in the headlights. My mind racing with what I WANTED to say, but not wanting to see them run away… lol
Great topic. There is much to it and your angle is a really good one to take a close look at.
Cheers!

Hi Susanne,
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts!
I definitely can relate. Biting your tongue is a hard thing to do when you are just so excited. But in the end, it’s very beneficial.
Have an awesome day!

Hi Ilka,
This is so true. I hear my sister telling me about the other parents she is talking to.
It seems that kids are not a burden to building a successful business, but it is an asset.
I can see where for me not having kids could be a disadvantage. Guess I need to go to my nieces and nephews events more often.

Hi Tracey,
Thanks for stopping by! It’s wonderful to meet you.
Yeah, I definitely could see a great advantage for you going to your nieces and nephews events. Not only an advantage for you, but I bet the kids would love it too.
Have a great weekend!

They certainly would like me going to more of their events. My sister has been sheltering me from some of the more painful ones like watching a bunch of upper elementary and middle school kids doing a Shakespeare play.

Hmmm, I don’t know. I think seeing Shakespeare through the eyes of kids could actually be fun

Apparently, they were speaking in Old English as well. Just imagine a bunch of 9 to 13 year olds speaking in Old English. It probably was funny.

Hi Ilka,
You’re absolutely right, being a parent gives you many openings.
As long as it’s done tastefully, it can make a difference to your business by tapping your local market.
When other parents ask me why I am always around to pick up my kids, this opens the door for me. They asked.
I don’t dump on them, I just give them a taste. If they want to get a spoon in dig in, that’s when we swap contact info.
Glad you touched on this subject.
Have a really great weekend,

Hey Jerome,
Thanks for stopping by! Bet it’s still kind of unusual for a dad to pick up his kids, huh? I can see where that could be a conversation starter.
Talking about kids… It’s the weekend. Stop working and enjoy them
Even us entrepreneurs have to take a break, LOL.
Have a terrific weekend!

Great post Ilka! Love what you said about not “throwing up on people”! Big mistake to make.
When I was with two companies, I would just say “I’m in the business of me”. Yes, I would get a strange looke, but then they would start asking questions, and I would carefully answer them.
I still like to use that line. One guy said “that’s so cute..really, what do you do?” LOL
Have a great weekend!

Hi Twila,
I LOVE it!! “I’m in the business of me.” That really is cute and I can see where that would get people wondering and wanting to know what it actually is you do.
It’s all about being original.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Wow! That is so true!! Being a parent really is a great advantage to having a network marketing business. It’s also good to be a network marketer when you have kids because you get to spend more time with them and go to more of their activities without having to ask for “time off” from work.
I like the way you answered the question when someone asks us “what do you do”. Thanks for that great example!

Hi Mirdza,
I agree, network marketing opens a chance for time freedom. Especially for us moms. We want to raise our children ourselves instead of having them raised by nannies or daycare.
Thanks for visiting and leaving your thoughts!
Have a great day!

This is so true. But don’t limit it to yourself. My wife recently had a baby and now often attends a number of local mother and baby groups, she always gets onto talking about what I, (her husband), does. The amount of work this has generated for me has been great. I run a small architectural practice getting planning and building regulation approvals for home extensions. (New babies often = requirement for home extension and additional bedrooms). I guess its true to say I have made a profit off the first year of being a parent – how weird I was expecting it to cost a fortune!!!
