With all the holiday spirit around me I realize how blessed I have been this past year,  blessed because I have had the privilege of spending it with you all my dear readers.

As this year is slowly coming to an end I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support, your valuable feedback, your great encouragement and your awesome friendships. I have no words to express my tremendous gratitude. Thank You!

That alone is enough reason for me to be “thankful.”  But another reason Thanksgiving is special to me is because it marks the beginning of the holiday season which has always been a very special time of year for me.

I remember as a child I used to go to the toy store just a few short steps from our house and I would stand there for hours watching the colorful display of all the toys. The train set was especially fascinating to me. I never got tired watching it go around and around, through the tunnels and up the hill. Through the little towns and coming to a halt at the tiny train stations.

A train set was on my Christmas list for years, but I never got one. Neither did I ever get the teddy bear that I so longed for. But I did get some very special dolls.

Ooops, I got side tracked.

This post wasn’t supposed to be about Christmas but about Thanksgiving and giving thanks.

We have a tradition at our house to share the things we are grateful for before we start eating our Thanksgiving meal. Our boys never liked that very much growing up. They would have preferred to start eating as soon as we sat down at the table. And maybe they were also a little embarrassed to share their gratefulness so candidly.

“We’re not doing “that thing” again this year,” they would ask. But sure enough we were. Sighs could be heard around the table and my husband and I would look at each other and smile.

So, what am I grateful for this year…

Well, for one I am very grateful for my health. I went through some rough patches this year but over all I am still in very good shape.

I am also very grateful for my wonderful family, my dear husband who never gets tired supporting me and our three amazing sons whom I am so very proud of.

I am grateful for George our boxer, for his unconditional love, his sloppy kisses and his great sense of humor. Laughter is the best medicine!

I am grateful to have a roof over my head, warm clothes on my back and food on the table. So many Americans as well as people all around the world don’t even have the basic necessities of life. It’s really sad! And no matter how bad things will become for us, we are still blessed and in better shape than almost 80% (or even more) than the popularity of the world.

And last but not least I am grateful for all of you, my dear readers who walked with me through another wonderful year of blogging. Thank you for reading my posts and coming back for more. I so appreciate you!

I would like to especially thank my Top Commentators so far. I know it’s early and the month is not over. I will write my usual appreciation post to acknowledge you all on Friday. By the way, that post will most likely be my last for 2011.

“Whoa! Wait a minute,” you might say, “the year is not over.”

Making memories instead of making money.

No it’s not, indeed, but for the past 10 years I have promised myself to take December off, but each and every year I have fallen short and not kept that promise.

This year I intend to keep that promise.  I will take the whole month of December off!

I know, I know, December is a great month to make money because people are in spending mode already.

Very true! But this year I will make memories instead of making money.

I will do what I wanted to do for a long, long time…enjoy the Advent, the time leading up to Christmas.

This may be the last year our sons will be living at home with us due to the bad economy. So I will enjoy their company. I will also finally read those Christmas books I have sitting around unopened. And I will bake some cookies and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate (or two) when I read them.

BUT… while I will be spending a lot of time just enjoying the season with my family, I will also be taking some time to sharpen my axe and learn new skills so that when I return in January I will be able to serve you even better.

The quote by Abe Lincoln comes to mind here:  “Give my six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

So thank you all so very much for your friendship and for your support throughout 2011, and I hope we will be walking side by side through 2012 as well.

Well, I didn’t really manage to do that.

It seems when you are involved in an online business there’s ALWAYS something to do, ALWAYS something new to learn and at my age, learning goes a little slower. Those old gray cells don’t pick things up as fast as they used to. Maybe I should buy some of those video games for seniors they advertise on TV. Maybe those would help stimulate my brain and make things easier to comprehend and remember.

But anyway…it was good to slow down a little and take matters more casual. It also was great to have more time to spend with my family and surprise them with a “Pancake Breakfast” once in a while or enjoy an afternoon at the movies.

When I started out blogging I thought the story (or blog post) ends with my signature at the end. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

It was Saturday morning and I was going about business as usual when our phone rang. I glanced over to check Caller ID, but because it was our second line, Caller ID didn’t show up. So after the second or third ring I picked up.

For some reason (I must not have been quite awake yet) I just said, “Hello?” instead of my usual more business like, “Hello, this is Ilka Flood how may I help you?”

The lady on the other line said… in perfect GERMAN,…“May I speak with your mother?”

Huh?

For a second or two I was totally puzzled. For one, I was taken aback by the lady speaking German, and two, why would she want to talk to my mother?

So I said, in German of course, “You must have the wrong number. Whom did you want to speak to?”

She told me the lady’s name and that just confirmed to me that indeed she had the wrong number.

Now, normally the conversation would have ended here and we both would have hung up. However, this was no ordinary case of a misdialed number. Over the next few minutes it became more interesting.

The lady asked me why I was speaking in perfect German. So I told her, that I was German. She then went on to ask me where I live and I told her I lived in Denver, Colorado. (I assumed she was calling me directly from Germany. I shared with you before what assume means, hehe.)

That totally surprised her, and she continued to tell me that she was part of a “Kaffeeklatsch” in Parker and that was the reason she wanted to get ahold of “my mother.” (A Kaffeeklatsch is kind of a German thing where ladies get together over coffee and cake and just hang out and talk and have a good time.)

“Oh,” I said, “that’s interesting, I live in Parker too.” That must have confused her a little as she went on to ask, “well, where do you live now, in Denver or Parker?”

So I explained to her, that I had assumed she was calling me from Germany and that is why I told her I lived in Denver. Nobody in Germany knows where Parker is, but Denver is familiar to everyone.

Anyway, we really hit it off and talked some more about this or that and then she invited me to join the Kaffeeklatsch. She thought I would really fit in great with the other ladies, but she first had to confirm it with the organizer.

In the meantime I’ve been there a few times and I met some very lovely German ladies. It’s always nice to make new friends, but when those friends are from your own country then that’s extra special.

Here’s the interesting part ….

The lady only misdialed one single digit of our phone number.

Just think about that…What were the odds that she would connect with another German speaking person? There are millions of people living in the Denver Metro Area.

Every time I think about this it just boggles my mind.

But anyway, twice a month from now on I’m taking a day off to enjoy it with my new friends.

Take Away…

So what does this have to do with my network marketing business?

Absolutely nothing, and absolutely everything. This business is about people. It’s about the connections we make and about the relationships we develop from those connections.

Life really has a funny way to connect people. We never know where these connections may lead but I truly believe that EVERYTHING happens for a reason.
