How To Install the Google Plus One Button On Your WordPress Blog

| Posted in Blogging |

Google + 1 The buzz has been going around about Google getting into the Social media arena with their own “like” button just like Facebook. I am not going into the details here about “what is Google Plus One” as you can read about it in more detail in my previous post “What is Google +1 and Can It Help You Gain An Unfair  Advantage Over Your Competition?”

Let me just say this…

Word of mouth is VERY powerful! How often have you acted on a recommendation from your friends? How many movies have you watched because a friend recommended it? How many new restaurants have you tried out because someone told you that the food there is really delicious?

You see where I’m going here?

We usually do act on a recommendation from a friend versus and advertising on TV or in a magazine. Right?

This is where Google Plus 1 comes in.

The developers at Google had the brilliant idea to create a button to let people vote on specific content that they like and would recommend to their friends. The more votes a particular piece of content gets, the higher it climbs up in the search engines.

Pretty simple concept, isn’t it?

So, how do you add the Google +1 Button onto your
WordPress blog so people can give their
vote of approval to your content?

It’s actually quite easy. Just watch this short tutorial video or follow the simple steps below…

Step 1: Visit the Google Developer Website here:

http://www.google.com/webmasters/+1/button/index.html

Step 2: Decide on the look and size of the button you would like.

Step 3: Login to your WordPress Dashboard and navigate to “Appearance >>> Editor.” Look for “Header (header.php)” in the right-hand menu under “Templates”. Grab the first part of the code and put it into the header.php just before the </head> closing tag.

Step 4: Go back and grab the second part of the code and place it wherever you would like the button to appear. For example, if you want the your Google Plus One Button to appear right below your post title, then place it in your Single Post (single.php) file just beneath the title tag.

(WARNING: Whenever you mess with code, be sure to make a copy before making any changes. So just in case you make a mistake you still have the original code.)

Voilà, you’re done!

Now, I placed my Google +1 Button in my Sharebar. (You can see it to the left.) In order to do that, first of course you would have to have the Sharebar plugin installed. Then you just go to the settings of this plugin and “add a new button.”

Here’s how you do this:

Step 1: Navigate to “Settings” on your WP dashboard and find “Sharebar.”

Step 2: When you click on it a window will open where you can “Add a New Button.”

Step 3: Give your button a name (Google +1 would be a good one, hint) and the position you want it to appear on your Sharebar.

Then grab the code for the “Big Button” and put it on top and do the same with the “Small Button” below.

Don’t forget to click “Enabled?” and “Add Button.”

Voilà, you’re done! You have just added the Google Plus One Button to your blog. Quite simple, isn’t it? Trust me, if I can do it, you can do it.

Now your visitors can give you a +1 to show that they liked your content. By the way, this is a hint =)

You know I love your feedback, so please share your experiences with “Google Plus One” in the comments below.

To Your Success,

The EnlightenedNetworker

P.S. If you found this post helpful please make sure you share it with your friends and followers.

And please, don’t forget to give it a +1 if you liked it. (Make sure you are logged into your Google account, or the +1 will not work.) I would really appreciate it.  Thank You!!

Hi Ilka,

pretty cool. Thanks for sharing your advice. It makes perfect sense to use Google Plus 1. Well, if the advantage really is unfair when everybody does it, we’ll see ;-)

Take care

Hi Volker,

Thanks! Actually, as with anything online things move very fast. So now there are plugins for the Google +1 button which makes it even easier to install.

If I would have waited a day, I wouldn’t have had to install it myself, haha.

But the positive thing about this is, I learned where to put the code just in case :)

Have an awesome week, Volker!

Great intro to +1 Ilka!

Love that you put this simple guide together on how to use code to install the button on your blog. Luckily there are now plugins to make it even easier, but it’s always good to have more options!

Apart form anything else, too many plugins can slow down your blog so alternatives in instances like this are helpful.

I think it could take off – it’s definitely worth getting on board and watching over time how much the +1 button gets clicked… We’ll see!

All the best,

Hi Jym,

I can’t believe I had to dig you out of the spam folder. What was it I just said on your blog about Akismet, lol. Anyway, glad I caught you.

Yeah, I found out about the plugins after reading your post, haha. But anyway, it was a great learning experience for me too.

Always appreciate your feedback, Jym, thanks!

Hi Tosin,

You’re so welcome! And like I mentioned in our chat yesterday ….before I got rudely interrupted by a disconnected internet…there are plugins available now that make the process a little easier. Except for installing it on the Sharebar, that part of the tutorial still applies.

Have an awesome day, Tosin!

Thank you for the great explanation Ilka. You’re an awesome teacher.

Hi Ilka,

Thank you. I did use the plugin at first but now have it on my floating share button as I try to keep my plugins right down.

Oddly enough Ilka I still can’t see +1 in my search results. It’s a mystery but I have resolved to just do a Jim Rohn and say, “Isn’t that interesting.” LOL

Have an awesome weekend Ilka.

Hi Marcus,

So sorry to hear you still haven’t solved the mystery of why the Google +1 button doesn’t show up for you.

Have you tried:

…a different browser?
…cleared your cookies and your history?
…you ARE logged in to your Google account, right?

Well, maybe someday, we’ll get to the bottom of this…

In the meantime, enjoy a beautiful weekend and stay warm.

Hi Ilka,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have tried them all but to no effect. Ha ha Oh well at least the button is on my site and when I click the button on other sites it registers. I looked in a few forums and this seems to be a problem for a few people. It will resolve some day … or not. LOL

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and thanks for all your help Ilka.

Hi Ilka!

Oh my! There was something technically wrong when I first tried to leave my comment here so I’m rewriting here what I originally had in mind. (You must be wondering why I just posted my smiling photo in the first comment! hahaha)

This is a great follow-up on the Google +1 article that you originally wrote. This time, it’s a step-by-step guide that could really help others wanting to try this new application a try.

Thanks for walking us through Google +1!

Hi Elmar,

I took care of your little “technical problem.” Broke my heart to delete it, but I thought you didn’t want it to show up in the comments. Or did you? :)

Anyway, thank you so much for your kind words! Since at the time there were no plugins for the Google +1 button available I thought I’d make a quick tutorial on how to get the button on your WordPress blog.

Have an awesome rest of the week!

Hi Ilka, Great article! I am using the Google +1 plugin on my WordPress blog and it works just fine. Not a lot of my readers know about +1 yet, so I haven’t gotten a lot of +1′s yet, but hopefully the word gets out and their use will be more common.

Thanks for your great blog spreading the word about +1!

Ilka, aloha. WOW! What a terrific tutorial. You may say you are not a techie, however, you certainly seem like one in this.

Thx so much for taking the time to put it together. Though I keep hearing conflicting report or “to +1 or not to +1,” I must confess that I am thinking I need to put it on and I can always remove it later.

Best wishes for a terrific week, Ilka. Until next time, aloha. Janet

Hi Janet,

Thanks! By the way, that was my very first video too. Was a bit nervous, but I guess it went okay.

You are absolutely right about thinking you should put the +1 button onto your blog. And of course you can take it off anytime if you’d like. But in the meantime you won’t miss out on all the votes of approval you’ll get by people giving your content a +1.

It’s absolutely worth it! You have great content!

Aloha,

This was a great tutorial. I use Digg Digg and I recommend that for any new blogger. Playing with your theme html can get very dangerous. :)

But if they follow your tutorial here… I’m sure they will have no problem!

Welcome to my blog! It’s a pleasure to meet you.

Thank you for your kind words! They are very much appreciated.

And yes, absolutely, messing with the original theme code is not a good idea unless you totally know what you are doing. That’s why I love plugins. They are easy to install and easy to get rid of as well. But sometimes they’re not yet available.

All the best,

Hi Ilka, I just found your video this morning on YouTube and I left a comment. I also sent you a friend invite. I have a suggestion for you – be sure to add a link back to your blog post in the description of the video on YouTube. That will give you a nice backlink and make it easy for people to find your post.
I’m really glad to see you doing videos now and I’m looking forward to the next one. Cheers!
