Thanks, for not dying Mom! – Part 1

A Trip to the Emergency RoomThis post is very personal, and I have been contemplating whether or not to share it with you all. But in the end I felt like I needed to.

“Thanks, for not dying Mom!”

That’s what my son said to me, after I had just spent 9 hours in the emergency room.

14 September 2011 is a day I won’t soon forget. I had an appointment for a routine medical procedure early in the morning and so my husband and I were on route to the hospital at 5:50 am.

Everything was fine until 10 minutes into our 30 min trip to my appointment. All of a sudden my face started tingling. Then my hands and my feet started tingling too. My calves tightened up as if they were wrapped tightly in Saranwrap. The same started happening to my arms up to my elbows.

I had no clue what was happening so I got increasingly more scared.

About 10 minutes away from the hospital my chest started tingling and by the time we hit the last stop light before the hospital, about 3 minutes away, it had tightened up so I hardly could breathe.

My husband wanted to pull over but I begged him, “Please just get me there. I think I’m dying.”

It was a long light and five cars in front of us.

“Okay, that’s it,” I thought, “I’m going to die right here 3 minutes away from the hospital.”

But as soon as the light turned green, my husband got around those cars and “floored it.” He blasted down the street, missed the first exit to the hospital, which turned out to be a good thing because the shot to the ER was shorter from the next exit.

By the time we reached the entrance to the emergency room I could neither move nor talk anymore. My hands were clutched tightly together and I was unable to get them apart to undo my seatbelt.

My husband ran in to get help but was too impatient to wait for any response of the ER staff so he came running  back out seconds later with a wheelchair. However, since I wasn’t able to move anymore he just grabbed me, carried me into the ER and put me on a gurney.

Within seconds a whole swarm of emergency staff wheeled me away, ripped of my clothes and hooked me up to all kinds of wires.

Then they placed a mask on my face to slow down my breathing, hooked me up to an IV and gave me some meds to slow down my heart rate which had shot up to 166.

At two o’clock in the afternoon they were contemplating of keeping me in the hospital overnight for observation because my heart rate was still between 130 and 145. It only had come down to 80 briefly but went right back up.

I didn’t want to stay so I tried my darndest to be really calm, think “happy thoughts” and even tried to sleep a little bit. Luckily it worked out and I got to go home a little after 3:00 pm in the afternoon.

Nothing will have more of an impact and help you reevaluate what is REALLY important than 9 hours on a gurney in the emergency room.

At least for me it did.

As I was lying there, scared and not knowing what was going on a lot of thoughts went through my head.

But…I will share this in part two as this post is getting quite long already.

Hi Ilka,

are you ok now again?

I feel with you very strongly – since 8 years I have a pace make and it was very exciting before they put it into my breast.

And I am very excited to read the Part II.

I wish you much health

Oh wow, Volker! You are way too young for that! I can imagine that you can strongly relate. Does that interfere with your martial arts?

I used to have heart palpitations. As a matter of fact, that’s why I was in the hospital when 9/11 happened. But I haven’t had any since I started drinking Tahitian Noni Juice almost 8 years ago. All my life I have been pretty healthy.

I have no clue what happened Wednesday. They labeled it a “Panic Attack,” but I wasn’t panicking until the symptoms actually started.

I’m totally fine now. Good as new :) “Unkraut vergeht nicht.”

Wishing you much health as well, Volker, and thanks for your heartfelt comment!

Be blessed,

Ilka

Hi Ilka,

thanks for sharing this story. Well, I am definitely happy too that you are alive and kicking, aren’t you ?

Isn’t it interesting that your husband missed the exit which turned out to be a good thing ?

Your guardian angel was in place.

I can relate that you were scared and that your busy thoughts were racing in your mind.

You will share them with us, as you note.

Be blessed and take care

Hi Oliver,

Yes, I am very glad I’m still kicking too. And so is my family.

You know, it’s really weird how things play out sometimes. I was quite upset when Randy missed that first exit, but had he not, I might not be here today because we would have had to drive through a construction zone right in front of the hospital. And yes, definitely, my guardian angel was looking out for me.

Thank you so much for your kind words and well wishes, my friend!

Have a wonderful week!

Ilka

Hi Ilka,

The title of your post ‘got me’ first Ilka and then I was riveted to your story to the end. How frightening for you but thank goodness you are are back to being yourself now my friend.

From personal experience there is nothing more alarming than having numbers of medical staff hooking one up to one monitor after another and then declare that they have no idea what is wrong with one.

Well I say “Thanks for not dying Ilka!” and I look forward to reading your follow up post but until then take good care of yourself.

Hi Marcus,

Couldn’t really think of a better one as these words kept (and keep) ringing in my ears.

I very well remember your frightening ordeal earlier this year. You scared the dickens out of all of us….And yes, it is very frightening (as you very well know yourself) if the medical staff can’t tell you what just happened. The bad part is then, that you don’t know what to do to prevent it from happening again.

I too am very happy to be still here. Thank you so much for your kind words, my friend.

Be blessed,

Ilka

Oh wow, I bet you were petrified Ilka. You poor thing, how horrible to have to go through that.

Can’t wait to read part two to see what happened but from your comments, all is well and whatever it was wasn’t a major impact on you.

I’ve had one anxiety attack, about 13 years ago. Like you, I thought I was dying. My heart was beating so fast I thought it was going to jump out of my chest. I was nauseous and felt horrible. I found out six years after my attack that I also had a stroke at the same time. Probably brought on due to that attack. Luckily, no major damage was done.

We are SO happy all is well with you and thank you for sharing that with us. It’s been a week today so we are so blessed to still have you with us.

Hi Adrienne,

Yes, I was, which didn’t help matters at all.

Since you went through a similar experience you can relate to what it feels like. And gosh, your ordeal must even have been worse than mine if you had a stroke at the same time.

You know, that was my first thought, that I might be having a stroke, when I couldn’t talk anymore. But then as soon as they gave me some meds and pumped in some fluids I could talk just fine. So I’m sure I wasn’t having a stroke. And they also told me I wasn’t having a heart attack, which gosh I am so thankful for.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Adrienne, and I am so glad that you are fine too!

Many blessings to you,

Ilka
