3 Costly Mistakes To Avoid If You Are Blogging For Business

Blogging for Business

Start a Business Blog

First off, if you haven’t yet, start a business blog asap.

Especially if you have a MLM or network marketing business it is essential to have a nerve center or some sort of a ‘home base’ online. The reason behind this is, that you want to brand yourself instead of promoting your opportunity.

When I first started blogging I made all three of the mistakes below (and then some) and they cost me a lot of money.

Well, I didn’t know that when I first started, but by hanging around the right people I found out what I did wrong and corrected my mistakes very quickly.

So here they are … the 3 Costly Mistakes To Avoid If You Are Blogging for Business

1) Wrong Blogging Platform

When I started blogging two years ago I set up my blog on Blogger.com. But as I found out, if you want to blog for business then Blogger isn’t where you want to be. You want your blog to convey a professional image and the best blogging platform to accomplish this is to set up a WordPress blog.

2) Not Having Your Own Domain

I said earlier that you want to brand yourself. The best way to do that is to get your own domain name. (You can get your own domain name for very little cost at GoDaddy.com) If you don’t want to use your own name, then pick something that best reflects your business. For example, I picked “Enlightened Networker” because that best reflects me and what I do.

By the way, the best hosting service (in my opinion) is HostGator. I have a “Baby” account there which lets me host unlimited websites for under $10/a month. (You can set up your WordPress blog with just a few clicks in your HostGator back office once you get your account.)

3) The Missing Opt-in Form

This is a BIG one. Remember, you are blogging for business. So you need a way to build a list and build a relationship with that list. As we all know, people only buy from those they know, like and trust. And they don’t buy the first time they see our product either. It will take some time.

Once you have decided which autoresponder service you want to use, (I am very happy with Aweber) create an opt-in form and place it at a strategic place on your blog. The best place would be above the fold (top right or top left) so your visitors can see it and don’t have to scroll down for it.

(And yes, those links above are my affiliate links. So if you click on them and decide to use the service I will get some pocket change.)

Now the only thing left to do is write some eye-catching,  attention-getting and money-pulling emails.

By the way, my friend Jason Better  just happened to write a post about this subject today. Go over and visit his blog and click on “3 Surprisingly Simple Ways To Write “Better” E-mails”

So, there you have them, the 3 mistakes to avoid if you are blogging for business.

To your success,

Hi Ilka,

Those are excellent tips for the newbie.

And for the not so newbie that just doesn’t realize what to do yet.

All of the above mentioned are very easy to use once you get the hang of it. The key is not to let it overwhelm you, it’s actually a simple process.

Plus, we’ve got an awesome “tribe” to learn from!

Have a great evening!

Hi Twila,

You’re right! All three of them a very easy to use. If I can do it, anyone can. As you know, I’m absolutely no techie.

But correcting those 3 mistakes made a huge difference in my business and I just wanted to get the word out there.

Thanks for sharing it! Much appreciated!

Have a wonderful evening!

Hey Ilka

Have the right blogging platform and the best domain name is essential.

I really hope people do not over look this point.

Also to add another mistake I see people doing. Not responding to comments on their post. Massive Error in blogging. This is where relationships get built.

Great list, thanks

Hi Dwayne,

You added a very valid point. Thank you!

I was one of those people who didn’t reply to the comments. I didn’t mean to be rude, but I was new and didn’t know any better.

It’s really important to reply to comments though and build that relationship with your readers.

Thanks for adding this! It’s very much appreciated.

Have a wonderful day!

Hi Ilka,

This is a great blueprint for any beginner starting an online business. You have kept it simple and easy for anyone to understand. I think most people fear building a business online, simply because they don’t know where to begin. This is an excellent roadmap.

Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful evening.

Hi Anne,

And thank you! I just put down what I did wrong when I started. Because I know there are others out there who are making these same mistakes.

If I helped just one single person to avoid them I’ve done my job. (Hopefully it will be more than one person though.)

Thanks for your input and have an awesome evening!

All of these are 3 mistakes we don’t want to make.

When I first started I made mistake #1 and #2. The funny thing is I wasn’t getting that warm and fuzzy.

I nixed what I did, and went the right route. I wasn’t an easy decision, but I knew I had no other choice because I was in it for the long-haul.

Great post Ilka.

Hi Jerome,

I hear ya. I didn’t get the ‘warm & fuzzy’ at my old blog either.

I am very glad I made the move. The biggest challenge was to figure out how to move my old blog over to WordPress. Right there I wasted precious time. Well, I never did figure it out so I just started anew. Never regretted it!!

Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy a beautiful day!

Hi James,

Thanks for dropping back by! Yeah, I wish someone had told me sooner. But hey, once we know what to do and we have the right tools we just run a little faster to make up for lost time.

One thing’s for sure, had I stayed with my old platform I would have never got to meet such nice people as you and the rest of the “Better Bunch.”

Be blessed as you continue to bless others,

Ilka,

Great post.. these are indeed 3 very costly mistakes – starting with #1.

I cringe when I see .blogspot or .wordpress.com – there are so many benefits to a self-hosted blog that it’ll probably take up too much time to mention them all.

Thanks for sharing
Hector

p.s I love the way you structured this post – real clean, divided with subheads and to the point. Great stuff..

Hi Hector,

I feel exactly the same way when I see the .blogspot or wordpress.com URLs. Some of these blog authors are really talented. Sometimes I want to say something but I don’t want to appear rude.

Hey, thanks for your P.S. kudos!! I learn from the BEST :)

Have an awesome day!

Hey Ilka!

Nice Post! You have provided some quality information here. I think it is easy for new network marketers to get confused about which blogging/hosting sites, etc to use. I know from my personal experience that it can get confusing at times and I think you really helped to put this into perspective.

Have a blessed day!

Hi Ilka, long ago when I first started out, I used blogger and did not have my own domain name. Now I have a self-hosted website which I love better, and it does look a little bit more professional (yours does too by the way). I still need to get an opt-in form so I’m working on that. Thanks for sharing these tips with is Ilka and it’s nice to land on your blog. :)

Hi Hulbert,

It’s very nice to meet you and I’m glad you “landed on my blog.”

It’s easy to make the mistakes above when you are brand new. The important part is to realize it and correct them. Which you did. So kudos to you!

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful day!

Once again, thanks for the great tips. I had been using the free templates on several of my sites for quite some time which left my html and css skills quite rusty. But, recently I downloaded a whole new theme I purchased from wp Remix and I am so happy to be able to be so much more creative – it is truly exercising my mind and the results are much better than what I was working with before. I hope someday to be a WordPress expert..did I say that? I better be careful what I wishing for :) I think I need to figure out soon is how to get my profile picture to feed through…hmmmm!
