Building Your Network Marketing Business is Not a Sprint – It’s a Marathon

Are you building your network marketing business going full speed like you would run a sprint?
I’m back in the saddle again after an enjoyable break. I cheated a little and did not totally keep away (from the computer) like I had planned originally but I did take it very easy. And I took a lot of time to think. I guess, I really needed that. Both, the break and the time to think. I was going full speed ahead, always afraid I’d miss something if I didn’t and I lost myself along the way.
I am a very competitive sort of person. I hate to be left behind and I hate to lose. I am also very driven which, I guess, goes right along with being competitive.
Take time to smell the daisies while building your network marketing business.
I used to keep insane hours, working from when I first got up until going to bed. Notice, I said “used to” because there will be some changes from here on forward.
“Working” didn’t mean 12 hours of income producing activities. A lot of the time was spent on learning new things, growing my list and driving traffic to this blog. While these activities eventually mean income, they will take time.
Building your network marketing business takes many different activities. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle. Each one of them important to make the picture complete. But it is not a sprint. It’s a marathon.
Before I went on break I had drawn out my goals for the rest of the year. Going over them again now, I realized that I have set my deadlines very tight. Too tight. On purpose, because I wanted to reach my goals faster. But why really? Just so I can prove to myself that I can do it? Nonsense. I’ve proven that many times over. The first time I was 10 years old. I think it’s time to “live a little.”
You can’t run a marathon from the start to the finish line like you would run a sprint, at your top speed. You would never get there. You will have to pace yourself through the 26 miles, taking in some water along the way to keep you hydrated.
I know that some of you reading this blog post are just like me, building your network marketing business going at it at full speed. I know, because I read your blogs. If you can keep it up through the finish line good for you. But the likelihood is pretty slim. Most likely you will get burned out and maybe even quit.
Slowing down is perfectly okay. You don’t have to prove yourself to me or anyone else. The only person you are accountable to at the end is YOU. If you are reaching the goals you have set for yourself and you are happy with your accomplishments then that should be good enough. The important part is … to reach the finish line.
Are you pushing yourself too hard building your network marketing business just to prove to yourself (and maybe even someone else) that you can do it? That’s the way I am, but I am trying to change. When someone tells me I can’t do something, I am bound and determined to prove them wrong. Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

Hi Ilka,
A super quote here: “The only person you are accountable to at the end is YOU.” This is Wisdom 101. Thanks for the reminder
I have been guilty of sprinting when I should walk. When on an inspired surge, I go for it. Sometimes I forget when inspiration has abandoned me and I in am in a state of desperation.
I have learned to pull back more frequently, taking breaks throughout the day and some days I just lay in bed or laze around the house.
You can only truly grow by letting go consistently.
It’s good to see you back and I am glad you enjoyed the break!

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for your kind words! Had I not stopped to “think”, that quote may have never come about. But it’s really true! If YOU are happy at the end of the day with what you have accomplished that’s ALL that matters.
I’ve done the same thing … sprinting when I should have walked. I guess we all do that at times, because we are just so excited and we truly have fun doing what we’re doing. But slowing down a bit not only will ensure that we will last throughout the journey, it also helps us absorb what we learn along the way, cultivate the relationships we build and grow a really strong business.
Thank you for stopping by and for your great comment! I appreciate you.
Have an awesome week!

Oh Ilka,
First, welcome back, I missed you my friend. I always look forward to your posts, you surely inspire me.
No wonder we get along, we are like two peas in a pod. I saw you referencing me in your post, yes I did, lol.
I sure have been on a marathon for over 13 years, I’ve sprinted, stopped, sprinted and stopped…but never quit. I’m too stubborn to quit and besides then “they” would win if I quit.
This post is an excellent reminder though, I have been working lately non-stop like you wrote, were you that fly on my wall?
I’ll be getting that under control right away, thank yoiu for the reminder.

Hello Ilka
I am a huge fan of Kim’s and see your name on her blogs, so finally today I was “led” to click on it.
Wow! Am I glad I did.
I couldnt sleep and at 4 a m here in gorgeous CT I am at the computer.
At 78, I have been “pushing” and now it is more pulling it seems, to be super woman.
And I am paying the price.. big time!
I am experiencing panic attacks now as a result of years of abuse not only to my old physical bod but also to my spirit.
And have health problems.
At long last, I am beginning (trying) to slow down, give Mary the nurturing she needs, to lighten up, have more fun on the way… but it is NOT easy to change habits of a lifetime.
So Gals and Guys…Glad you seem to be beginning earlier.
Good! Keep it up: you will be sooo glad you did and your loved ones too.
So many rewards can be yours…important ones.
Thanks Ilka and you others.
Mary
BTW I am an Internet and Affiliate Marketer and with my online partner in CO and having more fun than I did in Networking (since 1968 in Amway) because I was “driven”. And really in whatever I was doing “sprinting” and galloping all the while.
And, as a result, got burned and “burned out” in this lovely business.
DO stop along the way and smell the roses and daises and play with your children and be PRESENT th them, listen to them, BE silly and have FUN!!
Thanks so much.

Hi Mary,
I’m so glad you stopped by and left your wisdom. It’s wonderful to meet you!
Oh my goodness, here you are at 78 and still ‘going at it.’ Good for you! But I’m glad you are slowing down.
Thank you so much for your comment! I hope my readers take it to heart. We have only ONE life to live.
Hugs,
Ilka
P.S. By the way, I’m a huge fan of Kim’s as well. She’s a very smart woman and a lot can be learned from her.
Hi Ilka
what you have said is so true. If people looked at their business the same way an apprentice looks at their trade, they would understand that it takes time to learn the tools of the trade.
Yes we need energy to create the momentum that is essential to our business, however you still need “margin”.
The problem with working at home, is that we work at home. The computer is always close and if we have given our home number to our team (which I don’t recommend, you need a second business line to keep your sanity) the phone is always ringing.
Well done Ika

Hi James,
Thanks for stopping by! It’s very nice to meet you.
Yes, ours is a business that needs to be learned from the ground up… just like any business or trade out there. In the beginning we are like sponges (or I was) wanting to learn everything at once. But it does take time and things are always changing.
You’re right, since we ‘work at home’ it’s tempting to work all the time. I had a discussion about that with my husband recently who is a mortgage broker working from home as well. And because we’re both working out of our house, our phones are always ringing, lol.
Have an awesome day!

I really like the analogy that you use comparing it to running a marathon or running a sprint. It’s a great analogy because the training involved is so different!
We really do need to pace ourselves in this business otherwise we run the risk of burning ourselves out.
Thanks for a great post!

Hi Stacy,
You’re absolutely right, if we don’t pace ourselves we risk burnout. I’ve been there … more than once.
To much ….even of a good thing … isn’t good. Just like eating icecream to fast and getting brain freeze, lol. We’ve got to slow down and enjoy it

Hi Ilka,
This post makes me think about when I first got into network marketing.
I worked an insane amount of hours for little reward, it wasn’t until I learned how to sort through prospects and work on my time management skills did I regain my life back.

Hi Larry,
Great to meet you and your little princess!
In network marketing you work a lot for very little pay in the beginning, but later you work very little and get paid a lot. A very wise man by the name of Dayle Maloney told me that once.
Sorting out the tire-kickers from the real prospects is important. But, like you said, that needs to be learned. That’s where ‘funnel systems’ come in handy.
Oh, time management! In all my years in this industry I still haven’t quite mastered that. I’m working on it though
Thank you for stopping by and for your great comment!
Have an awesome day!

Hello Ilka
I love walking
I have always considered myself lucky in that I love my career and job so I do not need to build my online business in a hurry.
But I have to watch out for being too complacent. To get things done I do need a sense of urgency.
So I have mapped out a five year plan with a few urgent steps along the way.
Glad to have you back from your vacation.

Hi Peter,
Having a plan is crucial. How would you know where to go otherwise? There’s a saying … “If you aim at nothing, you sure are going to hit it.”
Good for you for having mapped out your road map to success! Enjoy the journey!
Have an awesome week!

I suppose taking a vacation does help put all of life into a bit more perspective. I can see that it did that for you in this article! It takes wisdom to discern the difference between persistence and obsessiveness. You’re observation about people’s blogs is a good one too. I marvel at the high (don’t want to get in a fight with anyone so won’t give a number) number of posts per month that some bloggers put out. Keeping in mind that blogging is , as you said, only one piece of a larger puzzle. Can that pace be kept for 2-3 years? Yep, it’s a marathon – even if you are walking (ahem).

Yes, Richard, absolutely! I have a whole new perspective on things now.
I wouldn’t necessarily say I was obsessed, but I sure was driven. Still am to a point, but I will stop and smell the flowers more often along the way from now on.
Thank you for stopping by and for your great comment! I appreciate you!

Yup, Internet Marketing is not something one can hope to archive overnight. One must master the techniques and need to apply them continuously.

Great analogy Ilka on running the marathon vs. the spirit. The marathon sets the foundation and the sprint gives you quick results.. All us need to humble/surrender ourselves an let God guides us on our vision, destiny, purpose as well as mission in our lives.. Just Belief.. It’s Harvest Time!!
