Don’t Assume Anything About Your Prospect – Ask Questions Instead

Have you ever totally ‘messed up’ a meeting or conversation with a prospect? I mean, it seemed so promising. And then you got into your car to drive home (or you hung up the phone) and you thought to yourself, “man, I totally messed this one up”. What the heck happened?”
Could it have been that you have been “assuming” things about your prospect?
Someone once gave me the definition of “assume” and it’s not the one found in the dictionary or Wikipedia. It goes like this …
ASS-U-ME = When you assume something you are making an ASS out of U and ME.
Yes, it’s a bit strong language and I normally don’t talk that way but … it hits the point spot on. Don’t assume things about people. Especially those you don’t know or have just met.
When we assume something about our prospects we come to false conclusions which can lead to misunderstandings, non-understanding and mis-communication. And that messes everything up.
Also, how often do we say to people, “I know exactly what you’re thinking?”
How can we know what someone is thinking? We only know what we ourselves are thinking. We could assume (there’s that word again) what someone may be thinking based on certain circumstances or our own experiences, but then again, that would get us exactly to what I mentioned above.
So the best thing to do when meeting a prospect for the first time, either in person or on the phone is to ASK QUESTIONS. Ask lots of questions.
The more questions we ask the better we get to know our prospect and the better we can assess what his or her needs are.
That’s what we’re there for. That’s our job. To find out what our prospects problems are and then find a solution to fix them. We can’t do that by assuming but only by asking questions.
So do yourself a favor, don’t assume anything.
To your success,

P.S. You don’t have to share this on Twitter, Facebook or Digg, but if you do, I surely appreciate it. Thank you!

LOL, Ilka,
You come up with some good ones! I love it! It’s very true, we need to open our ears and really listen and when we do open our mouths, we need to be asking questions. The more we learn about our prospects, the more we can help them.
Great post!

Hi Twila,
Thanks! I try!
Assumption can not only get you in a world of trouble, it can also literally cost you the sale … or the new team member.
So glad you got your blog up and running again. Missed you!

Spot on Ilka
Great definition also.
Sometimes we are to quick to assume due to the outcome we want to get or avoid.
Asking lots of questions is the only way to really get to know your prospect. The more loaded the questions the more insight you will gain.

Hi Dwayne,
And thanks! You hit the nail on the head … sometimes we do assume something because we want it to be so. Isn’t it also called “wishful thinking?”
It’s always better to get the clear facts although they may not turn out to our advantage.
Have an awesome evening!

This is money advice Ilka, thanks for sharing with us.
Assuming might be the #1 error that people make when talking to prospects. Rather than talking to prospects we should be listening to them. We can’t possibly know what they expect out of a program or what their concerns are until we hear them out completely.
That’s why asking questions is necessary and it’s even more important to listen carefully.

Hi Ryan,
Absolutely! I totally and 100% agree. LISTENING is so much more important. I mean really listening and giving our prospect our full and undivided attention.
When we assume things we have already made up our minds. And when we talk we can’t hear.
Thanks for stopping by!
Have a great evening!

Great advice Ilka,
I thought it was funny when Jim Carey made his butt cheeks say “Can I ASS you a question?”
Ass-u-me is a good one but realistically it is so true.
I also like to ask questions. I recently learned from Dale Carnegie, the more questions you ask, the more you learn about them and for your follow-up, it is like calling a good friend back.
Thanks Ilka,

Hi Ilka, you are right.
I think is very important to ask questions. That is the only way to make a relationship and get to know who we are talking with so we could help them. Even though it would sometimes feel like harassing people.
Very good comment, Ilka.
As always, Blessings.

Hi Jose,
Hmm, I don’t quite see where it could be harassing people if you are genuinely interested in them and asking them questions.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts!

Hey Ilka,
You are on point! Assuming will not get anyone close to their goals. The only way to get closer to a goal is by knowing. The best way to know is by asking questions. This is awesome!

Hi Josh,
I agree. The best way to know is by asking questions. It’s the only way to find out anything for sure.
You can’t help your prospect or customer if you don’t know what they need.

Hey Ilka!
I totally agree. You have to be a consultant and not just throwing up all over people.
Asking a lot of questions is the way of the consultant. How else do you get to know someone?
I really like how you illustrate this point in your article.

I really do love your interpretation of the word “ASSUME”, Ilka.
I will think fast and hard before I assume anything in the same light again:).
On a serious note, you are absolutely right – be quick to listen and slow to speak.

Great post Ilka! The other important thing to remember about asking questions is that the person who asks the questions is perceived to be the one leading the conversation.
Recently I was speaking to a prospect and realized at some he had taken over the conversation by asking more questions than me.
I quickly resumed my position but I also realized he would be a great prospector.

Hi Ilka,
You have to ask questions. Can you imaging going out to dinner and not being asked what you want to eat?
You might get Liver and Onions, yuk.
When I write I’ll do anything I can think of to not use the word “ass/u/me” .
In my minds eye those two slashes just appear.

I’m trading part time have now have clear track record. Conservatively speaking, what success rate should I be shooting for before I consider trading full time for a living??

Good question! Unfortunately I don’t know anything about trading. I would say when you are able to comfortably live of what you earn trading, then I would make the switch to going full time . Until then, keep your ‘day job’ if you have one.
Hope this helps!
