Break Loose, Change Your “Employee” Mindset Through Personal Development

Urban legend has it that elephants are afraid of mice. Well, that’s not really true. Elephants are actually one of the more fearless animals in the world and they also have an excellent memory. However, they are not the brightest creatures or they would realize that they could kick the stake they are tied or chained to (at the zoo or circus) into next week if they wanted to.
You see, elephants are tied to stakes as babies and no matter how hard they pull and tuck they can’t get loose. I already mentioned the incredible memory elephants have. So even when they are fully grown they remember that they couldn’t escape when they were tied down when they were little so they figure they still can’t and don’t even try.
Good thing we aren’t elephants.
We are humans and as such we know better. We know we can change if we set our mind to it.
I wasn’t brought up in an environment where personal development skills seemed important. My husband on the other hand was always reading or listening to tapes to improve himself. If you checked out his library you would find your usual big name personal development authors and trainers.
It all changed when I started getting into network marketing.
I found that I didn’t have the skills I needed to be an entrepreneur. Being street smart is good, but not enough. Now I can’t get my hands on enough personal development training and my own library keeps growing. I realized how important it is to work on “YOURSELF” instead of anything else. You can’t give what you don’t have.
Although network marketing is now taught on some colleges, most of us didn’t have any formal training when we got started. So we had to acquire the skills it takes to become an entrepreneur from somewhere else. And so will you if you want to be successful in this industry.
First and foremost you will have to work on your “employee” mindset.
If you have been working a job for the past 10 plus years, than you probably have the mindset of an employee. You are usually told what to do by your boss or supervisor and you just do it. And when you do you will get paid. If you don’t you get fired. Pretty simple!
However, it’s totally different when you become an entrepreneur.
There is nobody to tell you what to do or how to do it. Now you are the boss and YOU are responsible for the actions you take … or don’t take. If you work your business you will get a commission check and your business will grow. If you don’t work it, …well, then you will soon be out of business. It takes a lot of discipline, self-motivation, consistency, persistence and perseverance to run your own business.
Just simply making the switch from employee to entrepreneur and expecting to be successful just doesn’t work.
You will have to switch your mindset as well. You will have to develop a mindset of a millionaire. (Because, your business has the potential to eventually grow into a million dollar business.) And you will have to pick up some very important business and leadership skills. That’s where personal development comes in.
In network marketing you are not just responsible for yourself but also for the people you sponsor.
You work as a team. Developing leadership skills is vital for your business. Thank goodness there is plenty of personal development material out there. There are books, CDs, videos, webinars, blogs, etc. You just need to make the time to work on yourself and develop the skills you need to be successful. It will be time and money well spend.
You don’t have to be the elephant tied to the stake, you can break loose and reach the success you desire. All you have to do is change your mindset and work on yourself.
“An army of lions led by a lamb will always be defeated by an army of lambs led by a lion”.
I picked up that quote from a post that my friends Ken & Melisa West published about Personal Development. I encourage you to go visit their blog and read it. It’s an excellent post.

P.S. If you want others to break loose from the stake that’s holding them down please share this post on Twitter, Facebook and Digg It. Thank you very much!
P.P.S. I guess I was a little off in my analogy about the baby elephants, but Michael Cole set me straight. So please make sure you read his comment below. Poor baby elephants!

Hey Ilka!
This was a great article! I didn’t know that elephants would just stay tied to a stake. That is crazy!
You know, that makes me think of another great quote by T. Harv Eker.
“If a hundred-foot oak tree had the mind of a human, it would only grow to be ten feet tall!”
It’s really too bad that some people do not realize their potential.
Hope you have a blessed day!

Hi Melisa,
Just think about that. It’s a crying shame. Here we are as humans being superior to any other species out there, have that incredible brain and only use a fraction of it. What would we be like if we used all of it… hey, just even 50%?
Gives us something to think about, doesn’t it?
Enjoy your evening!

I’ve never been huge into personal development from by way of others for a long time but that changed recently as I’ve begun my journey as freelancer and entrepreneur.
Sometimes you just have to be reminded that if you can build a great character for yourself, it rubs off onto your customers.
Networking has been picking up lately, I’ve been loving it!
I think the main issue with being an employee is that you’re given tasks that often don’t require skills to interact with others. You press a button, tear a ticket or exchange cash but when you get into the mindset that you have to provide actual interaction with your clients, that’s when your game has to step up.
Just like yours, my collection is growing

Personal development is definitely important Ilka,
One of the most important skills anyone will ever need to develop if they want to be successful in business is self mastery.
Sel mastery is not something that we develop by osmosis. It is through the reading of self development material that allows us to see what areas of our lives we need to work on.
Great post.

Hi Fred,
Thanks for your thoughts! You brought up an excellent point. If we’d never try to improve ourselves we’d never find out what areas of our lives we’d need to work on. Very true!
Cheers, and have a great day!

Hi Ilka,
Personal Development is like a circle, the more you learn, the more you want.
I liked your analogy about elephants, but you were a little off, baby elephants aren’t tied to stakes in the ground.
They are chained to massive posts imbedded deep in the ground. The chains and poles are strong enough to hold a bull elephant in it’s prime.
The babies will fight the chain for days until they are bloody, the shackles have to be rotated from leg to leg to prevent permanent physical harm, the mental anguish lasts a life time.
The remembered pain keeps the mighty elephant captive with nothing more than a dog’s leash tied to a garden stake.
Poor elephants.
Thank God we can choose to change our mindset. We can rise above the pain, and use it as a driving force to create a new, better reality.
Great Post,
Mike

Hi Michael,
Thanks for setting me straight! I didn’t know that. Oh dear, my heart goes out to those poor creatures. That’s terrible! I love elephants!
But you’re right, I’m glad we humans have the option to change our mindset and rise above the pain.
“When it starts to hurt, push a little harder.” That’s what champions do.

Hi Ilka,
That was a great article. I also enjoyed Ken & Melisa’s when they published that article.
I also had the same issues, never into personal development until I got into Network Marketing.
The first book I read was by Robin Sharma, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari and I was hooked on personal development.
I am now reading How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Let me tell you, I already implemented some of his training and IT STILL WORKS 50 years later.
We as entrepreneurs are unique people, it takes someone special to start a home business, not knowing how the next day will turn out are always up to task whatever it may be.
Always a great post Ilka,

Hi Tommy,
Thanks for stopping by! Interesting title, “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari.” I had never heard of that one.
You’re right, it takes a “special breed” to go through what we are going through and staying positive and never give up until the job is done.
Have a great weekend!

I love the example you gave in this post, Ilka – I certainly don’t want to be an elephant.
I did not see the value in personal development when I first started in network marketing; no wonder my business was failing.
It’s only when I started reading and learning that my business took off.
Great reminder to us all that our success starts with us and ends with us.

I enjoyed your post Ilka.
One of the challenges we as humans have are the self limiting beliefs we had entrenched in our subconscious as small children.
In my opinion these are pretty much like the elephants being tied to the post.
We continue to be limited by beliefs that don’t serve us until we realize what these are and change them.

Hi Marcus,
Absolutely! One of the big ones is “don’t talk to strangers.” It’s ingrained in our subconscious mind.
Also, when we make the switch from employee to entrepreneur we have to learn to think for ourselves again as oftentimes we totally relied on being told what to do. Many people have problems with that and that’s why personal development is so important.
Thanks for dropping in!
Enjoy your weekend!

[...] Another excellent post that we found this week was one written by our friend, Ilka Flood, which she titled Break Loose, Change Your “Employee” Mindset Through Personal Development [...]
So many home business owners do not realize it all starts with mindset. They would rather listen to seminars on how to recruit on FB rather than work on personal development.
Thanks Ilka for the great post.

Hi Ilka,
What a great story. You always do a great job at this.
You are so right though, if more can breakthrough those “self-limiting beliefs” they can have whatever it is they desire.
Some of those self-limiting beliefs weren’t so much of a problem while working for someone else, but when on your own, it shines more than you thought it would.

Hi Jerome,
Thank you for your kind words! I truly appreciate them.
You’re right, it’s a whole new ballgame when you are in charge of your own destiny. You can’t afford to be held captive by your self-limiting beliefs. You have to work on yourself to overcome them.
Have an awesome week, Jerome!

Our mindset impacts many aspects of our life. For business owners, an employee mindset will certainly hold you back, but it doesn’t have to hold you back forever.
Unlike the elephant, we can can ‘pull up the stake’ and grow to our potential, when we realize our stake (mindset) is the thing that’s holding us back. Getting to this realization is the challenge.
Thanks for sharing this great post Ilka!
